Sondra Cosgrove, President of the League of Women Voters of Nevada and Professor of History at the College of Southern Nevada, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Her teleconferenced presentation will spotlight Fair Maps Nevada, a bi-partisan coalition of Nevadans joining together to end gerrymandering through transparent redistricting.

Gov. Steve Sisolak on Wednesday instructed the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, Employment Security Division to waive the work search requirement and the 7-day wait period for approved unemployment insurance benefits.

Gov. Steve Sisolak’s request Tuesday night for all non-essential businesses in the state, including casinos, to close their doors for 30 days in order to avoid further spread of the novel coronavirus has been met with some confusion over what is and isn’t an “essential” business.

This morning we wake up to a new reality in Carson City.

Last night at midnight, by order of Gov. Steve Sisolak, all casinos and gaming machines in Nevada shut down, and with them a large chunk of the state's tax revenue.

Today at noon, all non-essential businesses are supposed to close their doors. A majority of the state's workforce is starting today not knowing if they have a job, if they will be paid, or how they will pay their bills.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Monday evening to a vehicle crash near the intersection of Fairview Drive and Saliman Road.

Since last week, when the State Fire Marshal announced preliminary findings regarding the cause of the explosion that damaged Argenta and Nye Halls on July 5, the University has made significant progress in several areas regarding the students affected, making arrangements for the upcoming Fall 2019 semester and planning for the longer-term. Here are some of the most recent developments:

Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Director Richard Whitley today announced that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) February payment will be issued at the end of January to ensure recipients are not affected by the federal shutdown.

A partial government shutdown affects roughly a quarter of the federal employees, as the rest have funding through September. Some functions will continue. Security and safety will largely be unaffected, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Air traffic controllers and airline safety inspectors will not be affected for holiday travel.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports a fatal motorcycle crash that happened Friday morning in the southbound lane of I-580 near the Highway 50 overpass.

Unemployment claims in Nevada continued a stable trend, with claims down 10.3 percent statewide in October, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said Tuesday.

In October, 11,620 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, continuing the stable trend seen over the last several months.

To make travel easier and safer, the Nevada Department of Transportation will temporarily suspend or alter construction work on three projects around the area during Hot August Nights and the Reno-Tahoe Open events.

No construction-related lane closures will take place between the evening of Friday, July 25 and the morning of Monday, Aug. 4 on NDOT’s Mt. Rose Highway project. For the Highway 50 project at Moundhouse, there will be some drainage and shoulder work that will not affect lanes of traffic, said NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese.

Beginning Thursday, the Nevada Department of Transportation will temporarily suspend major work on state road projects over the Fourth of July holiday weekend for easier travel.

There will not be construction-related lane closures beginning the morning of Thursday, July 3 and evening of Sunday, July 6 for NDOT projects including Kingsbury Grade, Mt. Rose Highway, U.S. 50 (Moundhouse-area) and other road work.

Although unemployment figures for Carson City won't be available until Friday, the capital city did add 200 jobs in September, the largest increase since June, adding to Nevada's overall improving job climate, state employment officials said Monday.

Statewide, the unemployment rate for September registered at a seasonally adjusted 9.3 percent, down from 9.5 percent in August. It is the lowest jobless rate since December 2008, according to a report released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
