Carson City hosts annual Senior Follies production through weekend

This weekend some of the area’s most talented senior citizens will be on stage at the Carson City Community Center in the annual Senior Follies production of “Those Delightful Decades.” This annual production is a fundraiser for the Senior Meals Programs offered through the Carson City Senior Citizens Center.

Heller Senate Campaign Calls Patriot Majority Attack Ads On Medicare Votes False

CARSON CITY – A television ad campaign sponsored by the pro-Democrat Patriot Majority attacking GOP Sen. Dean Heller on his Medicare votes has expanded to Las Vegas and is again being called false by his campaign.

The ads say Heller voted to “end Medicare,” twice, once while serving in the House from the 2nd Congressional District and once after being appointed to the Senate by Gov. Brian Sandoval in April 2011

Saturday night’s racing program at Fernley 95A Speedway started off with every car present on track for a tribute to fallen racer Tommy Teters, who passed away recently. Teters’ sprint car took one last lap and the checkered flag.

Heavenly resort at Lake Tahoe opens Friday for summer season

On Friday, June 8, 2012, Heavenly Mountain Resort will begin operating the Heavenly Gondola seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for sightseeing, hiking and dining. The Tamarack Express Chairlift will also operate, accessing miles of hiking trails with the best views of Lake Tahoe.

Pilot Lake Tahoe bus program to link Incline Village and Sand Harbor

A new bus service at Lake Tahoe that will run from Incline Village to Sand Harbor Beach State Recreation Area will begin this month.
A collaboration of the Tahoe Transportation District, the Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Highway Patrol and Washoe County School District will inaugurate the East Shore Express, a pilot Park and Ride bus service beginning June 15 and will run to Sept. 3, 2012.

Grace Christian Academy Completes 2nd Annual Serve-a-thon

The students of Grace Christian Academy (GCA) in Minden recently visited various local community service agencies and organizations to volunteer their time as part of the school’s Second Annual Serve-a-thon. GCA dedicates a week each school year to serve agencies and organizations within the area. Local businesses, corporations as well as private donors pledge money donations to the school in the fundraising effort that has the added benefit of developing character within the students.

14th annual Senior Celebration

This is a free health and information fair for seniors and their families in honor of Older Americans month! There will be entertainment and giveaways, including live music from the thirties, forties, and fifties by Sandi TenBoer, raffles, and a cake walk. There will also be free screening and testing for blood pressure, blood glucose, and other conditions.

The fair will run from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Carson Nugget ballrooms.

V&T Railroad offering special edition Mother's Day Train Rides

This Mother’s Day, take mom on an historical train excursion via the Virginia and Truckee Railroad Sunday, May 13.
This special edition train ride from Carson City to Virginia City will provide mom with a long stem rose, Wild West history, storytelling, shopping and dining in Virginia City to go along with the spectacular scenery. The train features a 1953 ALCO heritage diesel locomotive leading 100 year-old Pullman coaches displaying the distinctive yellow and green of the V&T.

Fernley 95A Speedway opened its 2012 season on Saturday, April 14 with a full racing program on the 3/8 mile clay oval. The track is under new management headed up by Vuki Wilson and Matt Ramthun with the slogan “A Racers’ Track Run by Racers”. Six racing divisions were on hand, plus a contingent of Box Stock Outlaw Karts driven by kids 5-10 years old.

Opening night at the Fernley 95A Speedway clay oval in Fernley, NV. Racing divisions include IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stock, Hobby Stock, Pure Stock Minis, Modified Minis, Dwarf Cars, and Box Stock Outlaw Karts. Spectator gates open at 3PM, racing starts at 6PM.

General admission is $8, with $5 tickets for seniors over 55 and kids under 8-14. Youngsters seven and under are free, as are disabled persons and military in uniform. The tailgate section will cost you $30 per carload, or $20 for driver and one passenger.

Auto Racing Wrapup

If there is such thing as an Easter Bunny naughty list, I’m pretty sure that David Reutimann will find his Easter basket full of rotten eggs tomorrow morning. He is definitely on Hendrick Motorsports’ bad list after ruining an almost certain 200th win and a probable 1-2-3 finish for the organization. Reutimann was limping around to try and stay in the top 35 in points when his car died at the end of the front straightaway, bringing out the caution. A wreck on the restart took out leaders Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon and damaged Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car.

Motorsports Wrap Up

Local race fans will soon get a taste of live racing, as two dirt tracks, a road course, and a drag strip all begin their seasons this month. Next Saturday night the quarter mile dirt oval at Fallon’s Rattlesnake Raceway will open their season, with Hobby Stock, Pro Stock, GenX, Rat Mod, Super Four, and 360 Sprint divisions in action, as well as four divisions of Outlaw Karts. General admission is $10, with $5 tickets for seniors, kids less than 64” tall, and kids under 5 years old free.

Outdoors with Don Q: Having fun in the snow above Palm Springs

Last Friday, Elaine and I, together with my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, Nevada, took a memorable ride on the “Tram,” high in the mountains above Palm Springs, Calif.
Earlier, Elaine and I had convoyed with Sal and Catali Quilici of Dayton to visit Don and Norma Reasons at one of their friends’ home, located across from the ninth green at the PGA West – Stadium Golf Course in La Quinta.

Carson City Symphony Russian Treasures Concet

Penned by Tony Schwartz and Marylou Ambrose, the show, "Dealt a Deadly Hand: Murder at the Carson City Casino Royale," takes place at Rick’s club, the first legal gambling casino in Carson City. Rick dreams of striking it rich – then two crafty Native Americans try to claim the land and his gold-digging ex-wife Lola shows up.

Some Nevadans are trying to start a new political party called the "DuoFreedomists" which they claim would serve moderates put off by the Republicans and Democrats. The group's policy goals to “freeze, shrink and shift” taxation and spending is very similar to those of the Tea Party.

Carson High School teacher Erin Been's passion for fitness has made her a Healthy Schools Program Champion, a recognition awarded by Alliance for a Healthier Generation. She has worked to make CHS students and teachers make fitness more fun with programs like morning yoga classes, incorporating dance into phys-ed classes and offering after-school programs to promote nutrition and healthy cooking.

Carson High football coach Blair Roman recognized the seniors on his team at the season-ending awards banquet Monday night. The team has won a share of the league title three straight years, including this season's 10-2 record.

The Brewery Arts Center is pleased to announce that the Proscenium Players, Inc. theater company will perform during the 2011/2012 season at the BAC. They will kick off their season with the production of “A Tuna Christmas”.

The PPI was founded in 1965 and since then has continuously entertained Carson City residents with a variety of shows. Over the years, the shows have been varied: drama, musicals, comedy, classical, improvisational, old favorites and avant-garde. Now, after a two year hiatus, the performance troupe is returning to the BAC.
