The 21st annual Senior Celebration is coming to the new ball room of the Casino Fandango on Thursday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This event is Northern Nevada’s largest health and information fair in honor of Old American month.

What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Zephyrus Brass Quintet will perform in the Expresso Yourself Café at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W King Street, Carson City, on Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. The live music is part of the Carson City Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, to be held that day from 1 to 5 p.m.

Kierra Bracken from the Office of Governor Steve Sisolak will preside over the Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month Proclamation Event on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, 222 East Patriot Blvd., Reno. The event begins at 3 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Carson City-based Mission Senior Living celebrated the groundbreaking of Mountain Lakes Estates Retirement Community, located off of South Meadows Parkway, just past Sprouts, in Reno. Upon completion in the spring of 2020, the 121,000 square-feet, four-story building will offer 130 apartment homes for active adults 55 and better.

Carson Valley Senior Living and Memory Care donated 50 percent of the community’s total move-in fees from November and December 2018 to the Wounded Warrior Project. The amount totaled $3,750.

The Wounded Warrior Project is a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans of the military actions following September 11, 2001.

Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, a Mission Senior Living community, is expanding its memory care neighborhood with a 3,200 square-foot addition that includes accommodations for eight additional residents. The $900,000 construction project began on Feb. 28 and is expected to take about six months to complete.

As part of its mission to give back to the community it serves, Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care donated 50 percent of the community’s total move-in fees from November and December 2018 to a local veterans’ organization. The community’s team members and residents selected the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center (NNVRC) and presented a $3,750 check to Justin Chavez, Regional Site Director and Cristina Crawford, Program Support Manager on Feb. 15.

Amanda Daig cares for residents living in the memory care neighborhood “as if each and every one of them was her grandmother,” says Tara Alto, administrator at Fernley Estates Senior Living and Memory Care in Fernley. The Nevada Caregivers Coalition honored Daig for her outstanding care by selecting her as “Caregiver of the Year” at the 2018 Caregiver Recognition Luncheon last month at the Atlantis Hotel Casino in Reno.

Deer are more visible in Carson City this time of year, but it's not because Santa Claus is coming to town exactly one week from now.

Hello Carson City, do you see what we see? With fresh snow expected in the Sierra overnight and holiday lights around town lighting up the night sky, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Will it be a white one in Carson City? As of Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, we're eight days away, so anything is possible. Here's what is happening around the capital city:

Christmas is getting closer, and in Carson City, that means holiday trains. From the V&T Railway's Polar Express to the Nevada State Railroad Museum's Santa Train, rails around the state capital are busy delivering Saint Nicholas to children and spreading Christmas cheer.

There are only two more Saturdays until Christmas, and Santa Claus is back in Carson City again this weekend ahead of the big holiday.

Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, a new Prestige memory care center opening soon in Carson City, Nev., invites the community to a free informational seminar designed to share evidence based, holistic approaches to avoiding memory loss on Friday, Dec. 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

Summit Estates Senior Living is collecting sleeping bags (new or used), hats, gloves, and socks to donate to the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center in Reno. Help take a bite out of Parkinson’s disease and spread some delicious holiday cheer by purchasing fresh homemade pies and pastries at the “Pies for Parkinson’s” event at Summit Estates Senior Living on Friday, Nov. 30, 1-4 p.m., 222 E. Patriot Blvd, Reno.

A sampling of fall pies, including chocolate, apple, peach, pecan, and pumpkin in regular and mini-sizes are available for purchase, along with fresh muffins, cupcakes, fudge and cookies. Prices vary.

Fernley Estates Senior Living’s 2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar is the perfect place to start your holiday shopping and bring the kids for a photo with Santa Claus. It's parade day in Carson City, which means a host of Nevada Day activities throughout the state capital all day long.

Of course, the 80th annual Nevada Day Parade is the centerpiece of the Silver State's 154th birthday celebration.

This award-winning documentary explores music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a sense of self to those living with dementia.

Local families and friends are invited to the Annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at Carson Valley Senior Living, 1189 Kimmerling Road, Gardnerville. Carson City-based Mission Senior Living broke ground on Mesa Valley Estates Assisted Living and Memory Care, an $8 million, 78-unit senior living community that will serve seniors and families in the Mesquite and Moapa Valleys, Arizona Strip and southern Utah areas.

On Sunday, Aug. 26, a team of residents from Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care will take their place at the starting line for a special 1-mile event created especially for the seniors, ages 66-90, by The Dolan Running Series, produced by Reno 5000.

Wearing matching team T-shirts and comfortable walking shoes, a few will have their walkers or canes in hand, but that’s okay, said Amanda Jenkins, administrator at Summit Estates. “Life is a journey and our residents embrace new experiences and challenges regardless of their age or physical abilities. They are physically and mentally ready to conquer this year’s race.”

For the past four years, Angels With Flowers has donated floral arrangements to hospitals and senior care centers throughout the Carson City area. On Monday, the program, established by local florist Lori Morris, donated its 99th and 100th arrangement of 2018.

Tazmanian Boxing Club, which has distinguished itself over past few years as more than a boxing gym, has moved to a new and much larger location at 3737 North Carson Street in Carson City.

The Kiwanis Aktion Club of Carson Valley recently completed a community service project in an effort to help brighten the days of some of the community's senior citizen population.

Over the course of the month of June, the Aktion Club painted 30 flower pots and planted live flowers in them. In early July, the flowers were donated to Brookdale Senior Living in Gardnerville to be distributed to the residents there.

Volunteers from Carson Valley Medical Center assisted club members with the planting on July 2.
