Milky spore is a bacterial disease used as an alternative to chemical insecticides to reduce Japanese beetle populations. This microbial or biological insecticide was one of the first registered in the United States in 1948.

United States Sen. Dean Heller and U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei were the featured guest speakers at Wednesday's monthly Soup's On luncheon series sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

JoAnne Skelly: Finding the best time to prune fruit trees

I’m often asked when the best time to prune fruit trees is. I pruned my crabapple and apple trees last week. I chose this time of year to prune them, not because it was optimum season for pruning, but because I couldn’t stand looking at all the ugly water sprouts (vertically growing small branches) sticking up haphazardly throughout the framework of the main branches. I see these trees from my kitchen window every day.

RISE Carson City Gives Back to Local Veterans

This Veterans Day, RISE Carson City, Carson City’s first medical cannabis dispensary, is giving back in a big way. 10% of all sales this Friday, November 11th will be donated to Northern Nevada Veteran’s Resource Center.

JoAnne Skelly: Is Pampas grass a problem?

My friend Paul asked me to write about pampas grass, Cortaderia selloana, which in some parts of the country has become a problem invasive plant. While it is not on the noxious weed list (listed as noxious by law) for Nevada or California, Nevada plant ecologists consider it potentially invasive in the Las Vegas area and the California Invasive Plant Council has categorized it as a “high” threat to the state’s wildlands.
