About 700 additional Nevada National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will enter the fight against COVID-19 this week, Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday.

Amid calls and emergency directives designed to “flatten the curve” and prepare Nevada’s beleaguered health care system for an expected surge in COVID-19 cases, state leaders are still preparing for the worst.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 79,285 regular initial claims for the week ending March 4, up 7,343 claims, or 10.2 percent compared to last week’s total of 71,942.

This is the second highest weekly total in state history. Through week ending April 4, there have been 271,533 initial claims filed in 2020, this is 28,417 more than the state saw in the last two years combined.

A no-cost virtual education program presented by the Alzheimer's Association will be on April 22 at 10 a.m.. CARSON CITY — The Quad-County Emergency Operations Center is partnering with the Salvation Army in Carson City to lend a hand to our communities ensuring we keep our people safe and provided for at this time. On Friday, March 13, Carson City resident Sena Loyd filed as a candidate for State Assembly District 40. Loyd, 36 and a registered Democrat, is an information professional currently working in the high-tech industry. Previously she served as the Library Director for the Carson City Library from 2014-2019.

The University of Nevada, Reno announced yesterday that students were being asked to vacate the dormitories and that no refunds would be given. However, following public outcry, the university changed their policies and have now announced refunds will be given.

CARSON CITY — According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s February 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada is down 1,000 jobs over the month but up 18,300 over the year, a growth rate of 1.3 percent. This marks the first time since July 2012 that Nevada has grown at a slower rate than the national average.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Shirlee Leah Boyer Veverka, age 84, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020, from complications of Parkinson’s disease, at her daughter’s home in Carson City, Nevada, surrounded by her four children.
