Nevada unemployment claims in May continue to fall

Initial unemployment insurance claims filed in Nevada during the month of may amounted to 10,963, a 12.5 percent decrease compared to a year ago, according to figures released Thursday from Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Carson City's average weekly wage shows 1 percent growth in last quarter of 2014

The average weekly wage in Nevada rose to $899 during the fourth quarter of 2014, an increase of 1.6 percent relative to a year ago. In Carson City, wages gained 1 percent, from $861 in 2013 to $870 at the end of 2014.
Statewide, this is the highest quarter on record since 1996, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

April unemployment in Carson City falls to 7.7 percent, down from 9 percent last year

The April unemployment rate in Carson City fell to 7.7 percent, down from 7.8 percent in March and 9 percent last year, according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

The statewide unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 7.1 percent in April. Just as Nevada unemployment rate saw a decline, so did each of the state’s metropolitan statistical areas. The Reno-Sparks area unemployment rate fell from 6.9 percent in March to 6.7 percent in April, which is down from 7.8 percent a year ago.

April unemployment claims filed in Nevada were down 9.3 percent from April 2014 figures, with the general trend in claims, captured by the 12-month moving average, remaining relatively flat, falling by 0.8 percent to 14,510 in April, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Amid constrained federal transportation funding, the Nevada Department of Transportation’s dedicated bridge inspection and rehabilitation program has led Nevada bridges to be named the nation’s best.

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association’s recently-released analysis of 2014 national bridge inventory data (www.artba.org ) details the $115 billion backlog of bridge preservation investment needed to repair and modernize the nation’s more than 61,000 structurally deficient bridges.

Nevada’s unemployment rate remained at a seasonally adjusted 7.1 percent in February, but is down 1.3 percentage points year-over-year. Las Vegas’ unemployment rate (not adjusted for seasonality) dropped to 7.2 percent, down three tenths of a point from January and 1.3 points from last year.

The Carson City MSA was home to the largest year-over-year decline of 1.9 points, for an unemployment rate of 8.1, down 0.4 percentage points relative to January. The Reno/Sparks area is also down three tenths over the month, to 7.1 percent, but is down 1.5 percentage points over the year.
