Below is my article that was published in Nevada Appeal (3/22/2014), although it is titled: Become educated, involved in local government.

For this column I will state personal views on a few topics: education, city employees, the Sheriff Department, the Board of Supervisors, ending with a little insight about Jim Shirk.

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — The Storey County Fire Protection District used a little ingenuity with its latest ambulance upgrade resulting in a $66,000 savings to its tax payers. The savings are a direct result of recycling an old ambulance box and placing it on a new chassis.

A Scripps Institution of Oceanography-led study on how natural and man-made sources of nitrogen are recycled through the Lake Tahoe ecosystem provides new information on how global change may affect the iconic blue lake.

“High-elevation lakes, such as Lake Tahoe, are sentinels of climate change,” said Lihini Aluwihare, associate professor of geosciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. “Small changes in the lake’s chemistry can have big impacts on the entire ecosystem.”

Presented by the Sierra Nevada Alliance, South Tahoe Earth Day Committee and Patagonia South Lake Tahoe, the 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival South Lake Tahoe combines award-winning environmental and adventure films with the energy of local activism. Featured films will include exciting outdoor adventures, environmental battles and inspirational stories of people making a difference. The Film Festival will take place on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the MontBleu Showroom.

Head down to the Friends of the Carson City Library’s book store tonight to hear author Mark S. Bacon speak about his newest book, Death in Nostalgia City.

A talk about the freeway art in Carson City by Mary Fischer, author of Carson City History in Motion is tonight, as well; sponsored by the Douglas County Historical Society, it will be held at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville. If you need to sing your heart out, check out karaoke at the Feisty Goat Pub or at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

THURSDAY:

Music isn’t just for the weekends in Carson City. Dave Leather will sing you the blues at Comma Coffee during your lunch hour and you will find live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant and at Living the Good Life Bistro and Nightclub in the evening. Take a look at the new art hanging up at Comma Coffee as they host their monthly Backseat Gallery Artist Reception.

The first Monday of the new year means that we swear-in our newly elected officials. You can witness both Carson City's swearing in and the state's ceremony today. Also kicking off today is a week long recycling program for your Christmas tree; just place it outside with your garbage on your regular trash pick up day.

With the holiday season now a memory and the decorations coming down, Carson City and Waste Management again offer their annual Christmas tree curbside recycling service beginning Monday. As in previous post-holiday years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to drop off locations.

Carson City and Waste Management again offers their annual Christmas tree curbside recycling service this season. As in previous post-holiday years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to drop off locations beginning Jan. 5, 2015.

It’s the time of year when new digital devices are given as gifts, but what exactly happens to the old ones? Oftentimes they’re put in a box and left behind. The Carson City Library has launched a plan to save gently used and in good working order older models of a number of digital tools.

Between Nov. 24 and Jan. 31, patrons can make a tax-deductible donation of working devices to the Carson City Library at its “Information Desk” inside the main branch at 900 N. Roop Street.

Thursday night’s 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards was the largest yet with over 300 guests in attendance as individuals and businesses were recognized for their exemplary services, products and programs in the South Shore community. Produced by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, also known as TahoeChamber, this prestigious awards program solicited nominations for six categories and eight total awards.

Over 175 nominations were received and 95 of those nominated joined their peers at the Nov. 13 awards ceremony at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Nevada Recycles program partnered with the Las Vegas Sands Corp. in a statewide recycled art contest to raise awareness of and interest in recycling.

This week's guest on It's Your City is Nicole Goehring, recycling coordinator for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. She provides an update on statewide and local recycling figures and places where residents can take their items.

NevadaRecycles, a program through NDEP, is committed to reducing waste and increasing recycling opportunities. Its mission is to preserve and enhance the environment of the state in order to protect public health, sustain healthy ecosystems, and contribute to a vibrant economy. It was established in 1992.

The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling.

Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of entry form and photos of artwork are due by Oct. 31, 2014.

In addition to a $200 prize to the first place class project, Las Vegas Sands Corp. will provide first, second and third ($250, $100, and $50 respectively) prizes in four categories: Kindergarten-grade 5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12 and Adult.

The ComputerCorps "Every-Home-A-Classroom" TechCamp is an annual summer program for youth 10-15 years old. For the past 14 years, this 2-week program gives kids the opportunity to learn about computer recycling, testing and assembly while building a computer system they can take home or give to a needy family at the end of camp.

Three basic principles of leadership are: to willingly place the needs of others above your own; make decisions for the betterment of the majority, and have the courage and self discipline to stay the course regardless of the consequences.

As an elected official serving Carson City I would like to share my thoughts on the Mayor’s “State of the City” report which gave the status of the City’s financial stability, showed major accomplishments of the past year, and provided an overview of forthcoming projects.

Carson City will provide Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with public works and Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the dropoff locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. The program continues to be a success. Last year the effort redirected 59 tons of wood waste from the city's landfill.

Former Nevada Assemblywoman and hospital trustee Vivian Freeman died Thursday at her home in Reno. She was 86 years old.

She successfully underwent kidney transplant surgery in 2011 and passed away due to complications from a stroke she suffered on Nov. 26. In accordance with her wishes, she asked that all treatment be stopped so that she could return home where she died at 11:00 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Bently Biofuels and The Western Sustainability Pollution and Prevention Network are teaming to provide collection sites around the region so that residents have an environmentally safe way to get rid of cooking oil used to deep fry their holiday turkeys.

During the holiday season the two organizations are reaching out to the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Lake Tahoe communities to encourage recycling of cooking oil used at homes throughout the region. Collection bins will be placed in various locations throughout the community from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Eve.

Nevadans are recycling more, according to a report released Wednesday by state environmental officials.
In 2012, the recycling rate was 28.8 percent, surpassing the state's goal of 25 percent, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. In 2012, Carson City had a recycling rate of 24.9 percent.

In 1991 legislation known as AB320 set a goal that at least 25 percent of municipal solid waste would be recycled in counties that have a population of greater than 45,000.

Greater Nevada Credit Union will host its annual Carson City Shred Day on Saturday, June 8 from 9 am to noon.
The event will include shredding and recycling services by American Document Destruction and Offsite, child safety information and K-9 Unit appearance from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Earth and science will be in the spotlight at Western Nevada College next week with two free lectures in Carson City that will feature discussions on global warming and the geologic history of Lake Tahoe. The events highlight a series of activities during Earth Week, April 22-27.

Renewable energy exhibits, an organic gardening lecture, alternative fuel vehicles and a tree planting ceremony will also be featured.

“Many diverse and interesting activities will be offered,” said Valerie Andersen, WNC public service librarian and college Earth Week event coordinator. Students, faculty and the public are invited to attend.

Grab a rake, a broom, a pair of work gloves and be prepared to apply some elbow grease, Carson City's annual spring cleanup week begins April 15.

Carson City Public Works reports this morning that because of holiday staffing issues and, most recently, frozen equipment issues, Waste Management is running behind in picking up Christmas trees.
