National Weather Service issues thunderstorm warning for Western Nevada

UPDATE: 4:45PM: At 4:05 p.m. Saturday, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 10 miles southwest of Gardnerville, moving north at 10 mph. Dime size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm. Brief heavy rain is also possible with this storm. Outflow winds could reach as far northwest as South Lake Tahoe.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

The National Weather Service in Reno advises that isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms have begun to develop Tuesday afternoon through the Western Nevada basin and range into Carson City. Lightning strikes were being reported throughout the area as well as rain showers in Carson City.

Local artists Deborah Stevenson and Deborah Foster collaborate to bring a vibrant new exhibit, The Power of Light, to the Nevada Artists Association Gallery (NAA) Sept. 10 – Oct. 20, 2017. Offering a fresh perspective and dazzling light, this exhibit showcases popular scenes such as Death Valley, Emerald Bay, and Pyramid Lake. In a one man show, Chris Bayer will portray both Major William Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington in “The Major and the Gambler” at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 pm.

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

With temperatures expected to soar past 100 Wednesday and Thursday, the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Carson City and much of western and northern Nevada.
