Mary Rose “Mosey” Vargas Covington passed away on April 2, 2018. Born in Auburn, California in November of 1942, Mosey grew up on a Sierra foothills ranch in Placer County and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. She came to the eastern Sierra Nevada in 1965 where she taught two generations of children and raised her own family.

The Carson City School District has announced that all public schools within the district are closed today due to winter weather that has settled on the area.

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Carson City Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce the 10 winners of $200 mini-grants. Few people living in Nevada today know that Baby Face Nelson, whose given name was Lester Gillis, spent a great deal of time in Nevada.

Nevada Republican voters spoke loudly last night. Again.

They spoke loudly in November 2014, voting down a proposed gross receipts tax (GRT) 4-to-1 and sweeping Republicans into control of Nevada’s executive and legislative branches for the first time in generations.

That was a mandate to hold the line on taxes, reform collective bargaining, stop the bleeding in the Public Employees Retirement System, improve schools through choice and other reforms, and especially to oppose the kind of tax 79 percent of voters rejected.

Others saw things differently.

Candidates for Carson City Mayor and State Assembly District 40 addressed a nearly full house of voters at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall Wednesday night during a candidate forum sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

The candidates participated in a structured debate moderated by Nevada Appeal Editor Adam Trumble.

As a group, they were asked questions on specific topics and each given two minutes to provide a response.

A staggering 955 classrooms are without licensed teachers in Nevada public schools, leaving thousands of students to be taught by substitutes, according to a report released Thursday.
If history is any indication, these substitutes will remain throughout the school year. Finding teachers mid-year has proven difficult for Nevada schools.

H.F. Dangberg Sr. came to the United States in 1848 as a young immigrant from the Kingdom of Prussia, and thence began a journey westward that ended in Douglas County, Nevada in 1853.

The Assembly Ways and Means Committee on Monday approved legislation that allows the state to designate underperforming public schools as turnaround schools and requires school districts to lay off the least effective teachers and administrators when staff reductions are necessary....

During the school year when schools are closed, parents of ESL school children living in Carson, Douglas and Washoe counties are also taking ESL classes for adults. When public schools are closed these adults will need English Conversation practice so they do not lose some of their skill.

Gov. Sandoval went to Fourth Ward School yesterday to sign AB165, the bill that creates "Nevada Educational Choice Scholarships," his pet project that will divert public school funding to private schools. They are supposed to give low income families choices, but will they?

On January 13, 2015, a symposium on Common Core was held in the Legislature Building. The participants were Professors James Milgram and Sandra Stotsky, both widely known and respected experts on eduction standards, who have actually participated in the development and validation of not only Common Core but also other standards before and since. The other side was represented by Steve Canavero of the Nevada Department of Education and Allan Grossman from the Washoe County School District.
