Senator Square: There’s always next year

Students competed Feb. 17 at the Thompson Federal Courthouse in Reno, Nevada in the Northern Nevada Regional Mock Trial Competition. All schools were given the same case construct and asked to create their own take on it, presenting it as an attorney and a witness would in a real court case.

It’s a great day for the kids with the Kerak Shrine Circus in Reno, cookie decorating at Genoa Candy and Coffee, and a Father-Daughter Dance at Dayton High School. Show some love to Carson High Senior Amber Reeves: she’s displaying her photography at the Brewery Arts Center for her Senior Project. Carson City Arts Gallery introduces their monthly Artist Reception tonight by welcoming Kathleen Osborne Flanagan. The nightlife tonight features music, karaoke, dancing, comedy and more. Former investigative reporter Frank Mullen to channel Dan DeQuille at Gold Hill Hotel

Journalist Frank X. Mullen will channel a colleague from the past March 3 at the Gold Hill Hotel’s Friday Night Showcase when he offers a presentation on “Dan DeQuille, The Washoe Giant.”

DeQuille was a compatriot of Sam Clemens, aka Mark Twain, when both worked at the Territorial Enterprise in the 1860s. However, unlike Twain, DeQuille stayed on the Comstock for more than 30 years, and didn’t achieve the fame of his fellow journalist Twain.

Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

Senator Square: Tomorrow’s attorneys begin their ‘practice’ at Carson High School


Want to be a lawyer for a day? At CHS, with Mock Trial, it is possible. Mock Trial is Law and Order set in a simulated trial environment in a real courthouse with a real judge. The Carson High School Mock Trial team will meet professional attorneys and students around the state to compete Feb. 17 in Reno.

Linda Whitehill, Co-ordinator of Community Service and Continuing Education, announced the new offerings at WNC Carson campus to begin Friday, January 13. “We are delighted to add these unique courses to our program,” said Whitehill.

Governor Sandoval to presents Adopt a Vet Dental Program founder with prestigious award

On Jan. 11, Gov. Brian Sandoval will present Linda Haigh, founder of Northern Nevada Dental Health Programs’ Adopt a Vet Dental Program, with the Veteran Supporter of the Month Award. This award recognizes Nevada citizens who dedicate themselves to easing the transition between military and civilian life for veterans and supporting veterans in need.

Nevadans urged to test their homes for cancer-causing radon gas

January is National Radon Action Month and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free radon test kits and educational presentations at various locations across the state, including Carson City.

Carson City Supervisors approve MPLUD amendment for Vintage at Kings Canyon

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 Thursday night to approve amending the city's Master Plan Land Use Designation (MPLUD) affecting the Vintage at King's Canyon Tentative Planned Unit Development (TPUD), but with conditions.

V&T Railroad partners with community college to transform Carson City train station

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad has partnered with an architectural design class at Truckee Meadows Community College for a conceptual redesign of the V&T’s depot in Carson City. The project provided an opportunity for 16 students to take their imaginations inside the classroom out to the community – in this case for ideas to transform the current depot into a memorable train station.

It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

Kindness ninja encourages Carson City students to commit acts of compassion

When talking with students, Brian Williams compares their lives to being dealt a hand of cards. Some cards are health or illness, wealth or poverty, strong families or dysfunctional ones.

“You can’t control the cards you’re given, and you can’t hand them back in,” he told Eagle Valley Middle School students Monday afternoon. “Sometimes people look at their cards and think, ‘This is a horrible hand, there’s no way I can win.’ But there are always people who can take a terrible deck of cards and come away winning.”

Western Heritage Festival at Dangberg Historic Park

A free Western Heritage Festival comes to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 17, beginning at 10:00 am.

The festival will include Dutch oven cooking, a heritage quilting presentation, Chautauquas of local historical figures, honky-tonk guitar and jug music, as well as a day filled with children’s crafts and activities.
