Movie Review: 'Captain America' takes on the bad guys

"Captain America," subtitled "the First Avenger," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is the fourth in the series of related comic book heroes brought to the screen.

And while it does live up to its pulp ancestry with lots of action and fantasy, it reportedly is a 124-minute promotional effort for a film to come, "The Avengers," all four heroes joining to save the world or do other good deeds.

Movie Review: New 'Transformers' fill offers lots of cyber fighting, occasion sparks of acting

If you really want to see a 3-D movie that exploits the medium, catch 'Transformers: The Dark of the Moon" now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City. You'll be bombarded by rocks and pieces of giant metal figures flying out at you.

Avoid unwanted encounters with bears at Tahoe

By the California Department of Fish and Game
The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) reminds people enjoying the Lake Tahoe Basin to take precautions to avoid black bear encounters. This area is prime black bear habitat, and many of these wild animals are not afraid of humans.
Recently, a bear had to be killed after a man in his tent was injured as the bear tried to break in.
Bears are constantly searching for food, which humans inadvertently make obtainable to them.

Movie Review: 'Larry Crowne' lacks wit of 'Bad Teacher'

"Larry Crowne," a romantic comedy now playing at the Fandango Galaxy in Carson City, is the second romantic comedy to hit the scene after the delightful "Bad Teacher," was a hit because of Cameron Diaz' loopy, wide grin.

Sadly, "Crowne"with Tom Hanks directing, writing and co-staring with Julia Roberts, can't come up with the wit and charm of "Teacher." Where "Teacher" is profane and clever, "Crowne" plots along predicable lines from the opening when Hanks as Crowne is laid off from a big box store (read Wal-Mart) because he does't have a college degree. Sure.

Movie Review: 'Green Lantern' shines

"Green Lantern," the current DC Comic ripoff now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineflex in Carson City, is all about a corps of Green Lantern good guys who protected the universe from evildoers such as Parallax, the baddest bad guy around.

Movie starts with Temuera Morrison as Abin Sur getting hit by Parallax while sledding through space and crashing on a rocky beach. With his dying breath he send his powerful Green Lantern out to find someone to replace him in guarding Earth from Parallax.

Moview Review: 'X Men: First Class' a hot and heavy fantasy film

I missed a couple of the "X Man" interations so I can't offer much in the way of comparisons, but world opening audience size was down from the last version. That said, 'X Man: First Class," now screening at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is a film of its times, a melange of fast cuts, amazing technology which reveals its comic-book birthright with fantasy and some fact.

Fishing Report For the week of June 8-14

Here is the Northern Nevada, Northern California and Sierra fishing report for the week of June 8-14:

Movie Review: "The Hangover II" no worse than a bad cold

If you saw "Hangover," the flag-waver for the series, you know what "Hangover Part 2 (or II, it wavers) is all about. You probably know it so well that there's not a lot of attraction to seeing "Part 2.) Same cast, same story (but switched to Bangkok) same gags, same car chases (although a car chase in a Bangkok market with the good guys being chased by two motorcycle killers is a bit different, but not really).

Cutthroat trout record set in Utah

By the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
Curtis Robinson caught a 31½-inch cutthroat trout at East Canyon Reservoir this spring.
The fish Curtis caught is a new Utah state record—it's the largest cutthroat trout ever caught and released in Utah.

Curtis caught the 31½-inch "cruiser cut" at the reservoir in northern Utah using a handmade marabou jig.
"That's the fun part," Curtis said, "catching it on something you made yourself."

Photo Gallery: A Drive From Carson City to Carson Pass

Elaine and I took a ride on Wednesday from Carson City to Kit Carson Pass (elevation 8,500'), via U.S. Highway 395, Nevada State Route 88 and California State Route 88, to get some pictures of the deep snow in the high country.

Here are eight photos to enjoy:

Photo No. 1: The Hope Valley Store on the way to Kit Carson Pass. They might have a problem in getting to the tire chains.

Photo No. 2: Some summer rental cabins in a meadow, just before reaching Red Lake.

Nevada Legislature Rally for Education, Part 2

Yesterday I posted a whole bunch of pictures from Monday’s education rally at the Legislature. Here are a bunch more. And if this isn’t enough for you, I have a plenty more posted over at Flickr too.

Nevada Legislature Rally for Education, Part 1

This article is from AroundCarson.com. Click here to see more photos and to read the narrative.

On Monday, March 21st 2011, there was a rally in front of the Nevada Legislature Building. A bunch of college students from all over the state gathered to protest the budget cuts to higher education that were being tossed around the Senate and Assembly. I headed down there to check out the party and the spectacle, and I’m glad I did because over 1,000 people showed up! Some are saying that this is the biggest protest/rally that Carson City has ever seen. Students gathered on the lawn in front of the building, swarmed the halls, and even filled the visitor galleries in both chambers.

Rocket scientist breaks 39-year-old Nevada rainbow trout record

By the Nevada Department of Wildlife
While it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to catch a fish, it obviously helps to be one to catch a 39-year old state record for the largest rainbow trout ever caught in Nevada.

Elko angler Mike Mott, who really has worked as a rocket scientist, caught the 16-pound, 8-ounce behemoth on Feb.10 at Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). It measured 30 1/2 inches long and its girth, according to Mott, is about 20 inches.

Movie Review: 'Just Go With It' is lucky to have Jennifer Aniston in the cast

The romantic comedy "Just Go With It," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the latest Hollywood genre poke that, though has its moments, chiefly those involving Jennifer Aniston, it is marred by stupid toilet jokes aimed at making kids laugh and a couple of easily disliked young actors.

Movie Review: 'Unknown' a messy bargain that includes two car chases

The film "Unknown," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the kind of movie one wonders if anyone really read the script before proceeding.

Review: 'No Strings Attached' lives up to title with Portman, Kutcher

Natalie Portman has been busy this year, starring in a ballet film, "Black Swan," where she was a neurotic ballet dancer in black face mask, and in the current "No Strings Attached."

"Strings" is about Emma (Portman), a doctor, and Adam, a TV writer, (Ashton Kutcher) who get together after a party and a funeral (there's twist for you) and when I say "get together" I'm being sly — she doesn't want any relationship other than sexual, but sexual she sure wants, and director Ivan Reitman shows a montage of scenes in which Emma is dragging Adam into handy closets or bedrooms.

Howdy

I’m really happy with the way these pictures turned out this morning.
