Obama addresses conservation and climate change at Lake Tahoe Summit

President Barack Obama was cheered enthusiastically Wednesday at the 20th Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual gathering of federal and state leaders from California and Nevada who are dedicated to protecting the Sierra's crown jewel.

"I've never been here," President Obama told the crowd Wednesday at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in Stateline. "Its not that I didn't want to come, but nobody invited me."

The President quipped he's sure to return, "though my transportation won't be as nice."

Teens in Lyon County learn work, academic, and life skills through unique program

LYON COUNTY — This year the Comstock Youth Works program expanded to serve four of five Lyon County high schools and 80 teens from communities across Lyon County, with funding from a Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant through Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey.

New weapons available to Lake Tahoe boat inspectors in fight against invasive species

Smartphones became Lake Tahoe’s first line of defense against the introduction of new aquatic invasive species this summer.

As part of recently launched partnerships with agencies around the West, the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program receives real-time updates from other land managers about vessels traveling to Lake Tahoe from waters with a high risk of containing invasive species. The data-sharing app used by partner agencies acts as an early warning system for Tahoe’s watercraft inspectors.

Presidential Summit: Another historic turning point for Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe was at a crossroads in 1997. The lake’s famous water clarity, once measuring 100 feet, was declining year after year because of stormwater pollution from roads and developed areas and erosion from streams damaged by logging and cattle grazing.

Nevada addressing suicide as public health crisis

Suicide has reached epidemic levels in Nevada, according to numbers from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), and the state has been stepping up efforts in recent years to combat the problem.

"We lose more than 500 Nevadans and 100 veterans to suicide per year," said Luana Ritch, Ph.D., a Community Health Planner with the Nevada DPBH. "It's really looking at this now as a public health crisis for Nevada."
