Column: Christmas shows us that we are all essential
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 12/25/2020 - 11:10amOf the many lessons to be learned from 2020, not the least of which is that there's no such thing as a non-essential person.
To insist otherwise degrades the value of human dignity. Kind of like the way Henry F. Potter made George Bailey feel on Christmas Eve one year at the end of World War II.

2001: A Space Odyssey – 50th Anniversary Review
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 04/17/2018 - 8:28amWe need a break from politics. So, it’s our good fortune this month marks the 50th anniversary of perhaps the most remarkable film ever, producer/director Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Even more than Gone with the Wind, it was the most revolutionary film. It was radically different from everything before it, and it influenced all film after it more than any other work. Yet, nothing made since 1968 is really like it, either.

Take a ride with him at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, join him on the ‘Elf Crawl’ from the Capitol to the Carson Mall, or tell him your wish list at Debug Computers. Adults have a hard choice to make: the monthly downtown wine walk and the Holiday with a Hero Pub Crawl both take place today, and I’m not sure I’d recommend attempting both.

Column: All Roads Lead To Jerusalem/ Israel: Conclusion
Submitted by admin on Tue, 06/13/2017 - 2:26pmAccording to Dr. David Jeremiah in his new book, Is This The End?, many of his friends in the literary world as well as personal acquaintances, are asking this question also: are we indeed reaching the end times here on this earth? How many stressful and horrific events have to take place before some one, some where, and at some time erupts into a non-reversible action which is going to bring about another non-reversible action? Is this where the world is headed? Where to find confidence and calm in the midst of world events? Whom do we trust? Where do we place our trust?

The Godfather: It’s About Family and More
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/30/2015 - 9:41amWhy is The Godfather so popular among conservative men?
A Mafia film with some famously violent scenes and dealing with the problems of a family of criminals? A story that ends with the underworld boss fully in control after dispatching his enemies with extreme prejudice?
True, the earnest opening lines are: “I love America. America has made my fortune.” An awesome beginning, but that’s not the reason.
Much of the reason lies with the backstory we heard about how Francis Ford Coppola came to produce and direct the film and co-author its script with Mario Puzo, who wrote the book.

As one who has lived in Carson City most of my life, I have learned through the years that one day the weather can be gorgeous and then the next day: Bam, the countryside is covered with a deep layer of snow.
And once the snow arrives, it is followed by ice and cold weather, which will normally be with us into the month of March.

Forecasters are calling for a winter storm to blow in Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. It takes quite a bit of time and effort, but each year a whole host of activities take place at both locations in anticipation of Old Man Winter's arrival.

The Current Republican Leadership, the Catholic Church, Religious Conservatives and the Perils of Self-Refuting Logic
Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 2:28pmIn the United States a political party does not become the majority party in this country by becoming ideologically pure. They become the majority by becoming larger, inclusive, and superior to their political opponents not only in size, but should also be anchored in and unafraid of intellectual and discursive dialogue, devoid of reactionary emotionalism. Then and only then, can conservatism present and extend to the electorate our concepts in such a way that we will be accepted by the majority of our fellow citizens.
