NV Energy seeks electric rate increase a month after saying it will cut bills by 6.1 percent

After announcing last month its plans to decrease rates by 6.1 percent, NV Energy says it wants to adjust consumer rates, provide for refunds from energy efficient revenue collected in 2014 and increase electric rates an estimated 0.82 percent across all rate classes for Northern Nevada customers.

Debris that flew off a roof at the old Copeland lumber building on Stewart Street near the DMV and NDOT buildings in Carson City is causing some problems in the area this morning, including power loss.

Carson City dispatch reports wind scattered a large amount of debris in the area. There are reports of power problems associated with the debris and downed lines, according to Carson City dispatch.

Call center upgrade gives NV Energy customers 24-hour service

NV Energy announced Wednesday that it has launched a new statewide call center telephone system that allows customers 24-hour daily access to pay their bills, turn off power at an old address or power up at a new one, get a balance, make a payment or report an outage.

Traffic rerouted on Roop near Oregon after vehicle collides into NV Energy equipment

A single-vehicle accident this morning in the area of Roop Street north of Oregon Street has forced traffic to be re-routed. According to dispatch, a vehicle hit a fence and an NV Energy power box, which began leaking an oily substance. NV Energy has arrived on scene.
The accident happened at around 11 a.m. Occupants of the vehicle were treated and released.
The southbound lane of Roop is blocked.

Central Nevada ranch uses solar-powered irrigation acquired with USDA rural funding

If you are a farmer or rancher with irrigation costs that are making you wince, it might be time to consider developing a more energy-efficient system.
Dianne and Lee Hutchens of Central Nevada took the plunge into solar energy using USDA Rural Development's Rural Energy for America grant, and are glad they did. This winter, they have been earning credits from NV Energy; in April they will begin using the credits to power two circle pivots on 160 acres of irrigated pasture.

High winds kick up around Carson City and the Sierra as storm approaches

UPDATE 5PM: From Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks: According to NV Energy’s website, they will be working to restore power to the area as quickly as possible. Estimation of when an effected area will be restored is unknown at this time. Updates can be reviewed at NvEnergy.com.

Carson City area donations help FISH buy shelter shuttle

Through the support of Carson City area donors and organizations, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has bought a “new” used shuttle bus to transport residents of its homeless shelter. The 2008 Starcraft vehicle has a lift for wheelchair access and seats 13 passengers.

It replaces the FISH shelter van that had over 240,000 miles, carried only 10 passengers, and had no ability to transport clients using wheelchairs.

NV Energy offers free solar workshops for residential customers

NV Energy residential customers who are considering investing in rooftop solar are invited to attend one of two “Solar for Homeowners” workshops in Reno presented by NV Energy.

Representatives of NV Energy’s SolarGenerations program will explain the fundamentals of solar electricity and share valuable consumer awareness tips and resources to help customers make an informed decision when choosing solar.

Topics will include:
— Calculating your home’s energy use.
— Properly sizing a solar system.
— Selecting a solar contractor.
— Understanding different ownership models.

Gusty winds stir and shake but spare Carson City of major damage

Even though the wind has calmed some, clusters around Carson City remained without power early Thursday evening, according to NV Energy. Go here for the latest map and updates.

Carson City was largely spared, so far, by damaging winds that happened at Lake Tahoe, Carson Valley and Reno-Sparks earlier Thursday. Dispatch reports some downed power lines and tree limbs through late morning and the middle of the afternoon.

Ronald McDonald House receives furnace, thermostat donations

Four new heating, ventilating and air conditioning, furnaces and four programmable thermostats with sensors were installed at a reduced cost at Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada, a Reno non-profit that serves as a “home-away-from-home” for families with children in area hospitals.

Sierra Air, Inc., Carrier Corporation and Sigler Wholesale Distributors coordinated the procurement, transportation and installation of the energy-efficient components, providing approximately $23,209 of cost savings in equipment, material and labor.

Power outage affects about 30 customers around North Division area

About 30 NV Energy customers in the area of North Division on the west side of Carson City were without power late Friday morning. The outage happened at around 11:15 a.m. The cause is under investigation, according to NV Energy.

NV Energy begins work on new $6.1 million Lahontan Substation

Construction has begun on a $6.1 million substation that, once finished, will be a key hub for much of the power supplied to the Lahontan Valley, according to NV Energy. The substation is being built adjacent to an existing substation about a half mile northeast of Lahontan Dam.

Once the new facility is completed, the existing facility, built in the 1950s, will be retired from service and dismantled, said Russell Groesbeck, area service manager for NV Energy’s Fallon office. The project is expected to be finished by March 2015.

Big Energy Savings at New Warehouse In Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center

Energy sipping LED lights, along with an abundance of skylights and motion sensors that automatically switch off the lights when they aren't needed — referred to in the energy industry as "daylight harvesting" — are expected to reduce annual energy costs by about $110,700 at one of the newest warehouses in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Sparks.

First Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture set in November

The inaugural Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture will be Nov. 13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.
