Community Roots & Shoots’ annual Holiday Open House is Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 209 Dayton Valley Road.

Save the date for opportunities to shop local. Everything in the shop will be 10 percent off during the Holiday Open House. Complimentary treats and hot cocoa will be offered, and Santa will visit from 2pm-6pm.

The nonprofit floral and gift shop offers unique gifts, holiday and all occasion floral arrangements and cards, plus wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees.

With the season's first big winter storm expected to arrive later Tuesday evening into Thanksgiving, you can still get in activities around the capital city before the snow flies. During October, Michael Hohl Motor Company in Carson City held a pet food drive to fill a pickup for the national nonprofit Pets of the Homeless.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. As part of the Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Snapshot: Culling Our History from the Family Album, opens on December 5, 2019, at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. Snapshot is co-curated by Peter Michel, Interim Director of Special Collections and Archives, and Aaron Mayes, Curator for Visual Materials. The exhibition will be on display December 5, 2019, through January 23, 2020.
