Demonstration of Coin Press No. 1

A demonstration of Coin Press No. 1 at Nevada State Museum will be held on Nov. 30. Ken Hopple will show you how they struck the famous Carson City coins. This takes place in the Historic Carson City Mint building. Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. 10:30 am - noon and 1:00 - 3:00pm. Behind the scenes tour in natural history

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series: Virginia City and its Archaeology

"Virginia City and its Archaeology: A Thirty Year Overview" will be presented Nov. 15 by State historic preservation officer Ron James. The presentation features a discussion, artifact viewing and signing of James' new book, "Virginia City: Secrets of a Western Past," published by University of Nebraska Press in conjunction with the Society of Historical Archaeology. Discovery Lab at Nevada State Museum

Carson City to celebrate 'Day of the Dead' at Nevada State Museum

All cultures celebrate the dead as well as mourn them. And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

Nevada State Museum program teaches children wild animal awareness practices

Families are invited to explore “Beastly Encounters” at a special Nevada State Museum program from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 in Carson City. The activity continues the museum’s Family Fun Saturdays series. Children will explore how learning to observe animal signs, tracks and scat can help identify which animals have been in an area and how clues can tell about animal behavior too.

State Officials Looking For New Sources Of Funding For Construction Projects As Property Tax Revenues Falter

CARSON CITY – A state panel was told today that for yet another two-year state budget, there will be virtually no money available from property tax revenues for capital construction projects.

The state Public Works Board heard the disappointing news today as it began a two-day review of projects being sought by state agencies ranging from the Department of Corrections to Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

Nevada State Museum hosts Family Weekend

Spend a Saturday with the family and discover Nevada reptiles at the Nevada State Museum, in a hands-on nature program for kids of the ages 6 – 11. Of course, the parents have their own scientific duty as well; as the kids take on experiments with nature, parents will use microscopes and specimens in a lab setting. Activities will also include creating and painting a lizard or a snake model.
Adult admission is $8, free for museum members and children 17 and under. This event will take place on Saturday, July 14, from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson.

Museum research associate Mary Covington will talk at 6:00 pm about the history and significance of gifts sent from France to the United States aboard the 1949 Merci Train.
The exhibit includes 21 travel posters of French regions along with a wedding dress from Lyon, trench art, and personal treasures sent in gratitude to the U.S. for support following World War II.

"Behind the Scenes" Tours of Natural History

Dr. George Baumgardner, curator of Natural History, will take visitors “behind the scenes” of Nevada’s plants, animals, specimens and other natural history collections on June 29 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 North Carson Street. What’s so special about these artifacts is that they are not normally on display and encourages visitors to become familiar with these rare collections. A sneak peak of the new Discovery Lab and other future developments of the natural history exhibit are also included during the tour.

Jed Block to Present 'Now and Then: A Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes'

Jed Block will present a slideshow/talk on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library. The title of the talk is "Now and Then: a Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes." Mr. Block has collected numerous pictures of Carson City's Carson Street and downtown area from earlier periods, such as the 1950s and 1960s, and compares them to recent photos of the same locations. These comparisons reveal a lot about the history of Carson City and the colorful people who shaped its future. The event is free and open to the public.

Nevada State Museum Presents Lecture, 'The Chinese in Nevada'

Dr. Sue Fawn Chung, the leading authority on the history of the Chinese in Nevada, presents a lecture on her new book of the same title, Thursday, September 22 at the Nevada State Museum. Dr. Chung will be available at 6:00 pm to sign her book, The Chinese in Nevada, recently published by Arcadia; the lecture will begin at 7:00 pm. The Chinese in Nevada boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by. Professor Chung has been teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, since 1975.

Carson City Mint Coin Show

Coin collectors and numismatists from all over the country will be flocking to Carson City August 26-27 to purchase the coveted Mint Mark “CC” coins and other collectibles. In fact, the hobby of coin collecting is more popular than ever before, thanks to the high price of gold. Twenty-five dealers will be on hand from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm both Friday and Saturday, giving free appraisals and offering valuable wares to buy, sell, and trade. Raffle tickets are now on sale for the Grand Prize, featuring three special commemoratives: one ounce .999 fine silver medallion, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Nevada Territory; copper Abraham Lincoln Medallion; and brass Nevada State Seal Medallion.
