Nevada Humane Society

Supervisor Jim Shirk Column: Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

Doing the right thing is not determined because one consistently votes with the majority. One should always vote on the principle of what is right and fair. A vote may be a lone vote, if so, just say and repeat as needed: You can't break me. I don't have a breaking point.

From the Board of Supervisors meeting held on July 16. Agenda item No. 11. This item dealt with directing staff to examine the feasibility of Carson City joining the Nevada League of Cities (NLC). This is somewhat problematic, how could any Board member not consent and give the go-ahead to a feasibility study?

Humane Society's duck race grand prize courtesy of Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota

Nevada Humane Society is issuing a big public thanks to Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion for generously donating a 2015 Toyota Corolla as the grand prize for the annual Duck Race and Festival set for Sunday, August 23 in Reno.

On race day, 30,000 bright yellow rubber ducks will race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets. The first duck — not necessarily the fastest duck — to reach the finish line and enter the official duck trap will be the grand prize winner and can walk away with the Toyota Corolla that night.

Sunday, July 12: Things to do around Carson City

Grab your friends and family and head out to Genoa for the last day of the Cowboy Fast Shoot Competition right by the Dake House. Chili and Salsa are still at Glen Eagles, so you have a second chance to pick a favorite. It’s your last chance to catch Senior Follies at the Community Center, and the Proscenium Players have a matinee of ‘Murder in an English Manor’ this afternoon, as well.

SUNDAY:

  • NAA Exhibit by artist Nancy Clarke at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
  • Discounted passes for the Nevada State Fair Carnival for sale at the Carson Visitor Bureau: 716 N. Carson St. ($20 for an all-day ride pass; available until July 29; $30 at the fair)

Column: Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

In the movie Dances with Wolves there is a line, one of the characters says, and it goes something like this: “Somebody back east is saying, why don’t he write?”
Many of you might be wondering the same thing about me. Why I haven’t written for a spell? I could list numerous reasons, some might be worth mentioning, and others would be insignificant.

In simple true-to-life terminology — I’m back. A few of the hot topics from the June 18th Board of Supervisor meeting.
