It’s not very often that people are presented with a win-win scenario, but the new “Conserve Wildlife” license plate now available at any Nevada Department of Motor Vehicle office may just fit that description.
Money from the sale of the new license plate, which features a mule deer, sage-grouse and a rainbow trout against a classic Nevada landscape, will go directly to the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s (NDOW) wildlife education and volunteer programs.

Traditional chukar hunting areas affected by wildfire

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) urges chukar hunters to avoid popular chukar hunting areas recently damaged by extensive wildfire in northeastern Nevada.
Despite these fires, the department is still predicting excellent chukar hunting success this season.
Hunters are asked to stay away from China Garden in the Bloody Run Mountains, Tom Basin in the Santa Rosa Range, the northern portion of the Izzenhood Range south of Midas, the Hot Springs Range and the south Turscarora Range.

Chukar forecast points to successful season

Game biologists are often hard to understand. When trying to explain something to the everyday man, they forget to stop using all of their scientific terms and sometimes leave people more confused than ever.
When asked about the upcoming chukar hunting season, which begins Oct. 8, Nevada Department of Wildlife upland game biologist Shawn Espinosa wanted to avoid any confusion, “I think overall it's going to be a good to excellent season. Hunters are going to be very happy this year.”

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has scheduled a special upland game season just for youth hunters. This statewide season is Sept. 24-25 and is open only to hunters 15 years of age or younger. Participants will have the opportunity to hunt chukar and Hungarian partridge, California, Gambel's and Scaled quail, and rabbits.

Local game warden receives national award

Randy Lusetti, a game warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), has been named the National Wildlife Officer of the Year by the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association.
The annual award was given to the Reno based game warden in a ceremony held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada during the organization’s annual conference July 20.

Lake Tahoe boat inspection finds 37 quagga mussels on vessel

Boat inspectors at the Spooner Lake inspection station prevented a boat with 37 quagga mussels from entering Lake Tahoe on Aug. 7. The boat had arrived from Lake Mead, a water body known to be infected with aquatic invasive species. This incident was the first evidence of quagga on a boat attempting to enter Lake Tahoe this year, according to officials at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

The Sheldon hunt will be open for two weekends Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25. This is a permitted hunt, with 75 permits awarded by random draw available for each hunt by reservation only.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is offering a two-day moving water beginning spin fishing clinic on August 5, and 6.
The Friday evening session will take place at the Verdi Community Library and Wildlife Education Center from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This session will cover rod and reel selection, casting, line selection, basic knots and rigging for lure, bait and fly fishing with spinning gear.

Bear shot, found dumped near Peavine Peak

A member of the public discovered a bear shot and dumped on the east side of Peavine Peak near Kiowa Pond and reported it to Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) game wardens last week.
Game wardens have initiated an investigation into the killing of the 200-pound male bear that had been shot several times.
