What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Pedestrian safety improvements coming to Carson City, Dayton and Gardnerville

CARSON CITY — Beginning Monday, May 6, the Nevada Department of Transportation will launch multiple projects to install pedestrian traffic safety improvements in Carson City, Dayton and Gardnerville. Here's what NDOT will be working on in the coming days and weeks ahead:

'Star Wars' themed bicycle event Saturday to benefit Carson City Schools Foundation

CARSON CITY — Set for Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Fritsch Elementary School, the Bicycle Fun & Safety Day will benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health and hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation, Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event will serve as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms.

Carson City area road report Sunday to May 5 include single lane closures on Highway 50

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of April 28 through May 5, 2019. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

Single lane closures begin Thursday between Carson City and U.S. 50 Spooner Summit

Single lane closures will be in place on U.S. 50 in areas between Carson City and Spooner summit beginning April 25 as the Nevada Department of Transportation enhances storm drainage to help preserve water quality and reduce erosion.

Hello Carson City, today is Wednesday, March 20, 2019, the first day of Spring and the middle of the work week. Today is Nevada Moves Day where schoolchildren will be walking and riding their bikes to and from school. Unearthing Nevada’s Past at March Carson City Leisure Hour Club meeting

Uncovering Nevada’s past is the topic for the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, March 20. Presented by Dennis Casinelli, club members will learn about artifacts that he discovered while growing up in Nevada and during his long career as a highway engineer for the Nevada Department of Transportation. He also founded Cassinelli Landscaping and Construction, which still serves Northern Nevada today.

Power outages in Carson City, high winds close Washoe Valley to all vehicles over 9 feet

Multiple power outages are being reported early Monday afternoon around Carson City and Douglas County due to a weather system that prompted a High Wind Warning earlier this morning for much of the region. Meanwhile, wind gusts flipped two vehicles on I-580 north of Carson City in Washoe Valley late Monday morning causing some traffic delays.

Carson City area motorist report for Monday: Cold and sunny, clearing conditions

Public Works crews from Carson City and the Nevada Department of Transportation were busy Monday morning digging out, sanding and plowing roads from all the lake effect snow that happened Sunday.

Carson City area Winter road conditions for Friday, Feb. 15

Chains or traction tires are required on the following road ways in and out of Carson City Friday:

— Interstate 580 through Carson City, from the Spooner Junction at South Carson Street to Eastlake Blvd at the top of Lakeview Hill.

— U.S. Highway 50 from the Highway 395 junction at William Street to Deer Run Road in Carson City, and mile post 14 in Carson City to mile post 10.8 in Churchill County.

NHP: One northbound I-580 lane opened near Bowers Mansion after fatal Galena Bridge crash

UPDATE 8:40PM: The Nevada Highway Patrol reports one lane of northbound I-580 is now open north of the Bowers Mansion exit. Traffic is moving slowly past the scene of the fatal crash. NHP urges motorists to watch for first responders and drive with extreme caution.

UPDATE 8:06PM: Nevada Highway Patrol troopers remain on scene Thursday night at the fatal crash on the Galena Bridge. There are approximately 10-15 vehicles involved with one confirmed fatality. There is not an estimated time for reopening northbound I-580. NHP advises motorists to use alternate routes.

Northbound Interstate 580 at mile marker 12 in Washoe County near the Galena Bridge is closed Thursday night due to a fatal crash at the Bowers Mansion exit, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Road closures, travel restrictions on area roads Sunday morning

Heavy snow fell overnight in the Carson City area, resulting in more chain and traction tire requirements on local roads.

Travel restrictions are currently in place Sunday morning for Interstate 580 from about the Washoe County line through Washoe Valley to mile post 15.0 in Washoe County.

Chains or snow tires also required for Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate from the Bowers Mansion interchange to the SR 431/341 junction in South Reno, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) said.

Carson City physical education teachers participate in biking, walking safety training

On Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, Carson City physical education teachers opted in to take a comprehensive training class about biking and walking safety.

The Western Nevada Safe Routes to School (WN-SRTS) program, with the help of the Nevada Department of Transportation, conducted a “train the teacher” class for physical education teachers in the following schools:

Tire-chain requirement change for enhanced safety on certain Tahoe state roads

The Nevada Department of Transportation is reminding motorists of traction device requirement changes on certain Tahoe-area highways which require two-wheel drive vehicles to also use approved tire chains/traction devices during winter chain restrictions.
