Carson High NJROTC orienteering team headed to third straight nationals

Navy cadets on the Carson High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (CHS NJROTC) orienteering team know where they're going.

Equipped only with magnetic-north compasses and maps, these cadets have found their way to the Navy JROTC Orienteering Championships for the third straight year.

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The Social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM. Our speaker will be Commander James Shell, USN, Executive Officer, Naval Air Station Fallon. Commander Shell will be speaking on the expansion of the Bombing Ranges at Fallon.
There will also be an update on the activities of USNS Carson City,T-EPF-7.

Hundreds raised for Carson High's NJROTC Rifle Team

A fundraiser held last week at Chili's Restaurant in South Carson City collected $380 for the Carson High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Rifle Team in its quest to make the trip to a national championship finals competition next month, said team mom Sierra Asby.

"I had everything stacked up in the hallway where they could look through it," she said. "But most people don't look through it."

Most of the prints she carried were stacked on the floor because there wasn't the wall space to display them all.

ROTC students learn ship construction using cardboard and tape at Carson City pool

Before getting into her cardboard boat in the swimming pool, Nicole Brown, 17, was fairly confident her vessel was sound. “We made a strong keel, and all the weight is in the middle,” she said.

She made it four laps across the pool at the Carson City Aquatic Center before the cardboard became too saturated to function.

Art on the Porch Set for Friday to launch Carson City Jazz and Beyond Festival

Carson City, Nevada — To help launch the annual citywide Jazz & Beyond Festival, Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art at the Bliss Mansion prior to the 6:30 p.m. main concert. The art sale will take place Friday, August 5 from 4-6:30 p.m. on the porch, 608 Elizabeth Street, Carson City. Nevada State Railroad Museum names Dan Thielen museum director

Dan Thielen has been named museum director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, officials announced Wednesday. Thielen was curator of education at the museum for many years before he left to serve full time as an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard.
