July is National Parks and Recreation Month. As part of the celebration, the events listed below are happening at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 East William Street, Carson City. All of these amazing shows are free to the public.

Carson City is joining the National Parks and Recreation Association in celebrating July as “Parks and Recreation Month.”

With warm temperatures and long daylight hours, summer is a great time to explore your city’s parks and trails, try a new recreation activity, or relax and enjoy a show. The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department has developed a calendar of events and is offering many options for free.

A great way to experience a sense of adventure and discover incredible scenery is by horseback riding through the Shasta Cascade region.
Many trails found throughout the area include trails on National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, State Parks, and a couple of the National Parks that offer equestrian trails.
While traversing these trails riders can expect to experience breath taking country that cannot be seen in other parts of California.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, Tahoe author Janet Smith will be at the Costco in Carson City from 11-2pm for a book signing of the new anthology “Permanent Vacation: Twenty Writers on Work and Life in Our National Parks.” The collection, published by Bona Fide Books, features Smith’s piece “Pretty Enough,” a compelling account of coming of age in one of the world’s wonders, Yosemite Valley.

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.

Time to flip a coin and cash in on some Carson City history this week.
Today through Saturday is National Coin Week and the Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club will celebrate the occasion with events culminating on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum.

The 87th annual National Coin Week, will celebrate coin and currency collecting with the theme, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks.” The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club, both members of the American Numismatic Association, have several events lined up for the day.
