As the weather cools, motorists can expect more deer on city streets

Fall is returning to the area and as the days and nights become cooler, many deer are being seen around Carson City. This brings another challenge to drivers who typically do not see them on the city streets. As they forage for food and water, they cross yards and roadways in their search.

As you drive around the city be aware that they may dart out in front of you when you least expect it. With this in mind, pay attention to the speed limits and drive very carefully in areas where visibility is limited by trees and bushes.

Outdoors with Don Q: Exploring Alaska on the web

I have a "ton of fun" visiting all kinds of websites on the Internet, and enjoying all of their fascinating information and photos. They range all the way from our very own Carson Now Carson City to www.carsonvalleytimes.com in Douglas County to those in the far-flung corners of the world.

Of all of those far-flung websites, I mostly enjoy visiting those that are associated with the Far North: Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, The Northwest Territories and The Yukon.

Active 4-H clubs in Northern Nevada empower youth with agriculture education

As we countdown to the NV150 Fair in Carson City, we want to honor the kids that make the fair so very special. These are the kids who raise the animals so lovingly, yet are willing to release them for sale. These are the kids now bringing attention to the farm-to-table movement and are learning the value of a job well done.

As the late Whitney Houston sang, “I believe children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
4-H clubs were formed to teach our children the importance of agriculture and to learn new ways to better farm or raise their animals.

A Classical Conservative Speaks!

At one time, I use to be proud to call myself a conservative and a Republican. I considered myself to be a “classical conservative”, one who believes in limited government, free markets, individual liberty, a strong national defense, and firmly believed that the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals, and the placement of the individual in our society above that of the collective wisdom of the government.

The brilliance of classical conservatism is, and still remains, in its simplicity.

South Lake Tahoe forced to repeal sex offender ordinance

Due to a ruling by the California Court of Appeals, the City of South Lake Tahoe can no longer enforce their sex offender ordinance that made it a misdemeanor for sex offenders to be within 300 feet of a school, park or recreation areas.

At its May 20, 2014 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council had to repeal the ordinance. To be official, the City Council will have a second reading and vote on the item in June.

"This is mind boggling," said City Councilwoman JoAnn Connor. "I am disgusted that the court has decided to ignore children in deference to sexual predators."

Cliven Bundy And His Followers Are Not Patriots!

Event Date:
December 27, 2013 (All day)

I am always amused by those individuals who attach themselves to the United States Constitution in such a way as to be literal in its interpretation, wrap themselves in the Flag of our Nation, and call themselves “true patriots” and the defenders of our “rights and liberties”.

Apparently, if I disagree with their definition of “true patriotism” then I am something less than a citizen or patriot incapable of defending our “rights and liberties”.

Rally at legislature supports Nevada ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment

Ideological ...Purity?

Consider that in the Republican Party there has been a sometimes rancorous, sometimes healthy, sometimes divisive debate between conservatives, moderates, progressives, libertarians, evangelicals, social conservatives / fiscal liberals, social liberals / fiscal conservatives, "me too but slower" socialists, big-government competent managers of the welfare state, the TEA Party, Ron Paul supporters, limited-government constitutionalists, etc. , at least since the Goldwater-Rockefeller showdown in 1964.
