The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District-Sierra Front Field Office, has prepared the Churchill Canyon Grazing Allotment, Environmental Assessment (EA). The Allotment is located in the Pine Nut Mountains of Douglas and Lyon Counties, Nevada.

Despite excellent game surveys, good precipitation and increasing populations of deer, the Nevada State Board of Wildlife Commissioners voted to reduce the allocation of mule deer buck tags statewide at its May 14 meeting in Reno.

Amgen Tour of California officials say they should have a decision by 9 a.m. as to what they intend to do about the Stage 1 kick-off set to begin at South Lake Tahoe given that snow is expected in the Sierra through the morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office seeks the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for stealing approximately 4,000 pounds of copper wire from the Buckskin Mine. The theft was discovered on May 5, according to a press statement.

The mine is located in the northeast section of Douglas County, where it borders Lyon County. Access to the mine is made from the Lyon County side of the Pine Nut Mountains, through Mason Valley.

May 1 – Opening day of the 2011 fishing season at Hobart Reservoir in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe.
This season closes September 30.
Call the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) headquarters office in Reno at 688-1500 during regular business hours.

May 4 – First Wednesday of the month:

Hobart Reservoir, a small, high-mountain reservoir, located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, will open for the 2011 fishing season on May 1.
Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 1.

It will remain open to fishing through September 30.

The Brown Bite Continues! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt.
On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there.

With more than 20 earthquakes in several hours Saturday night, and 400 in the past week, Nevada Seismological Laboratory members have mobilized from the University to the Hawthorne area to step-up monitoring efforts for the region. The highest in the sequence occurred at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. It was a magnitude 4.6, followed 10 minutes later by a 4.1.

By the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest issued a prospectus on April 1, 2011, for two campgrounds’ concession operations that will begin January 1, 2012.  The prospectus solicits proposals to operate and maintain campgrounds and day-use areas under a special use permit.

The operator is responsible for all operations and maintenance of facilities in the permit.  Fees collected from users accrue to the concessionaire, with a percentage returned to the government as a permit fee.

Prime birding opportunities abound in the Shasta Cascade region. With more than 20 wildlife viewing areas, 4 wildlife refuges, and over 11 wilderness areas, bird enthusiasts are sure to spot a wide variety of bird species.

A website that dedicates itself to Silver City and proposed gold mining around the historic Lyon County community has been launched.

SilverCityNvBlogspot.com was developed by a group of town residents with the idea of providing a citizen point of view as Comstock Mining, Inc., fueled by record gold prices, looks to change the land-use designation of a parcel it now occupies and has been doing exploratory drilling.

The movie "Red Riding Hood," currently showing at the Casino Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, makes s couple of nods to the fairy tale story but goes into more violent and wayward actions.

In a way, this is a ludicrous film, with Amanda Seyfried as Valerie (Red Riding hood), who certainly has the wide-eyed look of a naive young lady (not as a young girl, need a little more sex than a girl could offer) and in one scene almost becomes engaged in a bit of sex.

I love snow. I moved to this part of the world 20+ years ago in large part because of the snow, especially that which falls on the mountains for our enjoyment.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:

A trio who allegedly stole scrap copper from a Washoe County construction site and brought it to Carson City to strip and burn it of its insulation, face felony theft charges.

Aaron Clack, Melissa Clack, and Josh Stevens, all from Carson City, were arrested Thursday in the Deer Run Road area after black smoke was reported coming from inside a brick structure. The case is being handled by the Department of Alternative Sentencing. Aaron Clack also faces an additional drug charge, authorities said.

Current water surface temperatures are at 35.5 degrees with water clarity at 7.5 feet. It has been sunny all week as forecasted. With the afternoon highs moving into mid to low 50s, and more sunshine is on the way, with the next possibility of some rain near mid week.

Organizers of the the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, announced today the Stage 1 and Stage 2 race routes for Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race as the official Overall Start is Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

Leroy Raymond Yeoman, 31, and Shane Robert Donovan, 22, were arrested Wednesday afternoon after an NV Energy employee reported witnessing the men cutting up a passive reflector microwave tower located in the mountains east of Sedge Road.

According to the arrest report, the NV Energy employee was dispatched to the tower location after the company lost the microwave feed from Geiger Grade. When he arrived, he said he observed the subjects cutting up the tower with a power saw and loading the metal in a pickup truck and trailer. The employee said the men admitted tearing it down for scrap.

Christmas tree cutting permits in select areas of Northern Nevada public lands will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office announced Thursday.

The agency allows Christmas tree sales to thin small trees in overstocked areas. Organizations and individuals are permitted to harvest trees for resale.

LAKE TAHOE — The 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, will start at Lake Tahoe, officials announced today.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race will feature more than a lap and a half around the Lake beginning at the California/Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe with the Stage 1 finish at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe also hosts the Stage 2 start at Squaw Valley USA, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

There’s usually a point in the year when summer clicks over to winter. I think we hit it this weekend. Last week we had temperatures in the 90s, this week there’s snow in the mountains.
I’ve also learned never to give October the benefit of the doubt, so I’d say we’re in for at least one more heat wave before Nevada Day. But I think we can officially say summer is over.
