Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) has announced its COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Program, which provides one-time funding to rural Nevada residents experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program provides financial assistance to qualifying individuals who are falling behind on their rent, mortgage or utilities.

COVID-19 has caused increased social distancing and self-isolation, and many Nevadans struggle to cope with the stress and anxiety of the pandemic. These feelings of fear are taking a toll on people’s mental and physical health and well-being.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada (BGCWN), together in partnership with Carson City Toyota, would like to thank the community for another successful year of meeting the goals for their annual matching campaign.

For every dollar donated during the months of February and March, Carson City Toyota matched those donations, up to $10,000.

MINDEN — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to debut its new upgraded, mobile-compatible website. The new website was scheduled to launch in March prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, and will serve as an online information resource even more now for the public to connect to the Sheriff’s Office.

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health recently received an emergency COVID-19 response grant in the amount of $98,960 from the William N. Pennington Foundation. The grant will contribute to needed equipment for Carson Tahoe during this dynamic virus outbreak.

The Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program (RSVP) has taken proactive steps and the necessary precautions to respond to the COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) outbreak and support communities across its 15-county service region including Carson City. The most vulnerable among us rely on RSVP’s volunteer services. Given the increased risks for those we serve such as elders, veterans and adults with a disability, RSVP is limiting interaction between its volunteers and clients by shifting programs to meet the emergent needs of care recipients.

The University of Nevada, Reno announced yesterday that students were being asked to vacate the dormitories and that no refunds would be given. However, following public outcry, the university changed their policies and have now announced refunds will be given.

Each year, CVS employees volunteer thousands of hours to nonprofit organizations in their communities. Joanne Dwyer, Director of the CVS Health Foundation, states that the CVS Health Foundation awards grants which supports these efforts and provides additional financial support to the causes supported by CVS employees. Grants, which range from $500 to $5,000, are awarded directly to the organization on the CVS employee’s behalf.

The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Carson Tahoe Care Center invites community members to attend a free information session on Thursday, February 27 at 2 p.m., on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care.

During this free session, elder law attorney John Smith will be on-site to share tips and tools to help community members understand the basics of elder law and other important elements to consider as families plan for long-term care.
