Tahoe Arts Project continues its 25th season with the comedy/juggler duo The Gizmo Guys on Friday, January 27th at the MontBleu Theater. The Gizmo Guys' rapid-fire act exhilarates and inspires sidesplitting laughter in audience members of all ages. The Gizmo Guys will bring their “Objects in Motion” show into the South Shore schools January 23-27 teaching children how juggling relates to science and math.

For bad luck Friday the 13th news, let's start with the hundreds of down-on-their-luck kids who are enrolling in the Carson City School District's Students in Transition program for children without permanent homes. The director of the program, Peggy Sweetland, estimates there will be 650 kids who qualify this year. To quote the "newspaper": "That number is nearly triple the 333 students enrolled at the end of last year." (Don't be too hard on the reporter who wrote this. If journalists like us were any good at math, we would be working in jobs that paid a lot better than journalism.) The program runs on federal grants and donations. The city's long-planned multi-use athletic center is scheduled to be completed by fall 2013, according to Parks and Rec Director Roger Moellendorf. The $5.8 million that will be used to build the 42,000 square foot facility behind the Western Nevada Boys and Girls Club on Russell Way comes from voter-approved Question 18 funds.

As I look forward to the year of 2012 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2011. Here are my top memories:

The second annual Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner to benefit The Greenhouse Project takes place Nov. 14 at Adele’s Restaurant and Lounge in Carson City.

The evening is limited to 80 guests and features six courses paired with wine, prepared by Adele’s chef and owner, Charlie Abowd and guest chef Mylan Schmidt of Coco Dolce, Carson City.

CARSON CITY – The Sandoval administration is pursuing two paths in an effort to resolve a potentially massive budget shortfall, seeking clarification from the Nevada Supreme Court on the case that created the issue and working with lawmakers on potential additional revenues should they be necessary.
Dale Erquiaga, senior adviser to Gov. Brian Sandoval, briefed a number of interested parties on the developments since the state’s high court dropped the potential budget bombshell on the Legislature yesterday.

How Do I Register and What Else Can I Do In Dayton on May 14?

Gee, and you thought the big issue at Thursday's meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors was going to the redevelopment project that has been the object of heated discussions for the past year.

But the revelation that a 14 percent hike in the property tax rate was also on the agenda seems to be causing people to put the Nugget Project on the back burner.

Dayton Intermediate School’s newly developing school garden will boast two large sculptures by internationally known sculptor Mischell Riley.

Riley, who is well known for work such as the 3-story high bronze lion at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, has donated two of her pieces to enhance the school’s garden landscape.

CARSON CITY – Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford has sent an email to supporters and constituents suggesting the next two-year state budget is facing an attack from “extreme right-wing” interests who will use the current economic crisis to “dismantle our state.”

With 34 people turning out for a good cause, the Dayton Resource Bank raised more than $1,100 during its 5K Run on Oct. 23. One hundred percent of the funds directly benefit Dayton area school children.

Among the participants were Dayton Elementary School Principal Cory Sandburg, Healthy Communities Coalition director Christy McGill, and the entire Freshman Volleyball team of Dayton High School.

CARSON CITY – Senate Democrats are running a slate of candidates across the state in the hopes of winning a 14-seat, veto-proof majority for the upcoming 2011 session.
But Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, said he does not expect it to happen, and he has not discounted the possibility of the GOP winning the majority.

CARSON CITY – An examination of how well states do in educating their low-income children generated some surprising results and shows Nevada ranking 18th in the national comparison, the authors of an ALEC report said last week.

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

A financial services bill working its way through the U.S. Senate contains a $400,000 earmark that appears to be destined for the business incubator that is part of the planned Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

Last week we reported that the governor's office sent a letter to Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis taking issue with certain parts of the feasibility study for moving three state agencies into the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

The one big item missing in that story was the Meridian Business Advisors feasibility study itself, which we now have a copy of.

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons approved plans today to phase-out operations at the 650-inmate Nevada State Prison in Carson City.

“It costs taxpayers an extra $4,000 to $6,000 per inmate for prisoners at NSP because the facility is so old and poorly designed,” Gibbons said. “Additionally, NSP is not as safe for prison staff as other facilities.”

Obtaining leases from three state agencies has been cited by the people pushing the Nugget Project as a critical piece to its success.

But, there's been more than a little skepticism that the State of Nevada, staring down the barrel of a $3 billion deficit in its next budget, has any appetite for spending money it doesn't have to.

Nevada is preparing to compete in round two of the federal Race to the Top grant program. Only two states that applied, Tennessee and Delaware, received funding from the first phase of the competition.

CARSON CITY – A study showing how well Nevada’s students perform on achievement tests, released today by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, concludes they fare no better than mid-range, and often well below, students in other states.

Tracking Sunday's congressional health care vote, Carson Now quoted Congressman Dean Heller with a statement from his Web site.

Last week, the Nevada Board of Regents held a meeting in what marks the beginning of nine weeks of discussion on how to further reduce their budgets to adjust for the 6.9 percent cut in funding agreed upon by Nevada Legislators during the special session in February.

An article in the Nevada Appeal this morning attempts to get new information from the Nugget Project’s “go to guy,” Steve Neighbors. Neighbors, who is now the owner of the Nugget, is quoted as saying that the project still lacks a developer to shoulder the “private industry” half of the project. That’s about all that’s new from Neighbors, that they STILL don’t have a private partner.
