The Northern Nevada Dream Center in partnership with Carson City Foursquare Church at Mark Twain Elementary School are hosting a "Back To School Drive-thru Bash" for all elementary school students needing school supplies and whose families are unable to afford purchasing those items themselves.

Carson High School students not only experienced exciting college, job, and career opportunities outside of school this past week, they were also presented with an explosion of options directly.

Chamber Orchestra Students returned from their successful regional music festival in San Francisco, several CHS students enjoyed job shadowing with Nevada Legislators, and May 21 offered students access to its job and career fair throughout the day.

Going solo, regardless the venture, can be a scary thought. Add a violin, a complex classical piece, and an audience of a couple hundred music enthusiasts, and a whole different kind of focus is required.

Such is not a new experience for 2018 Sierra Lutheran High School alumna Aleyna Gilson, who will find the spotlight on her again at the end of this month when she performs Mendelssohn’s concerto in E minor at the Orchestra Concerto Concert at Point Loma Nazarene University, in San Diego.

The Christmas season can be difficult for children in foster care. For some, it may be the first Christmas not spent with their families. For others, it is just one more Christmas in the child welfare system.

The Northern Nevada Dream Center, a Carson City based volunteer run, nonprofit organization, is holding its fourth annual Dream Christmas event, a mobile caravan of holiday joy and goodies for those in need.

Come one, come all. Scheduled for Monday, Sept. 10 from 4:30 to 8 p.m., this once-a-year event takes the traditional back-to-school night to a whole new level as Carson High School opens its doors a little wider and a little longer.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The Carson High School HOSA, Future Health Professionals had a Health Career Display Competition with 34 teams from 3 Health Science II classes. Each was judged on the display board’s information, artistic value and originality as well as a 5 minute oral presentation.

Monday is the first day of school for the 2016-2017 school year, so here’s a high-five, fist bump, fist pump, elbow bump, curtsey, cheek kiss, air kiss, hang-loose, Shaka bra, scout handshake, armed forces salute, Pabebe Wave, ILY sign, Grey Wolf salute, smile, applause, hand heart, two-finger salute, wave, kiss, hand shake, wink, hug, Vulcan salute, thumbs up, bow, nod, three-finger salute, kowtow, hongi, head bobble, hat tip (though these are against dress code), hand-kiss, genuflection, eyebrow raising, hand of benediction, and Eskimo kissing as a welcome back to all of the returning students, teachers, and administrators of the Carson City School District.

The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

Lifepoint Expeditions is hosting their first ever Dads-n-Kids Turkey Bowl. This is a family flag football event held at Lifepoint Church in Minden (Off Stephanie).

Hundreds of mourners attended the memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne on Saturday at the LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.

A memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police Department Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife, Jeanne Hounsell, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 11:00 a.m. at LifePoint Church. The church is located at 1095 Stephanie Way in Minden.

UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly single-vehicle rollover that occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday night that took the life of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell, his wife Jeanne and one other person.

Deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 21-year-old Jacob Wilcher on charges of kidnapping and attempted sexual assault. At approximately 11:40 am on Sunday, Douglas County deputies were dispatched to a call of an attempted child abduction at the Lifepoint Church, in Minden.

Honoring those who protect and serve our community and nation while addressing the grief, anger and fear that come naturally when we are exposed to unspeakable pain like that of 9/11 and the recent shooting incident at IHOP in nearby Carson City has prompted LifePoint Church to change the direction of their services this weekend. The focus will move to helping the local community acknowledge the pain of what happened, process through it and move forward with sensitivity, courage and faith in God.
