The last day of March and we are all itching for some springtime weather. Luckily, we have some nice days ahead. Dust off that motorcycle and head down to Bike Night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Enjoy an afternoon hike with Muscle Powered. The Kiwanis Club just pulled off their big annual Easter Egg Hunt and is always looking for civic minded community members to join: they meet every Thursday at Casino Fandango. Happy Thursday, Carson City. Spring break begins today and the sunny afternoon will probably be perfect for some kite-flying. School’s out, but the learning continues at the Nevada State Museum. This month’s installment of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series focuses on the history of the U.S.S. Nevada. Music is a great way to slip into the weekend: check out the offerings at Living the Good Life, Glen Eagles, or Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

I love Carson City. Our history is just one of the reasons, and you can learn more about it yourself today with the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk. Meet at the Capitol building at 9 a.m. and you’ll enjoy an hour of wandering down memory lane in our Historic East Side. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is quickly approaching and ticket sales are suspended during spring break, so you’ll want to grab them today or tomorrow. If you’ve ever wondered ‘Why Should I Like Shakespeare? then the workshop this evening at the Carson Library is for you.

TUESDAY:

It came to life in 1916, survived the attacks at Pearl Harbor and produced the first recipient of the Medal of Honor for World War II. Honoring the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, presents a lecture by Reno Judge Chuck Weller from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

The Brewery Arts Center has Celtic duo Men of Worth playing in the Black Box Theater, folk singer/songwriter Liam Kyle Cahill is at Living the Good Life, you'll find the Whitehats performing at the West Side Pour House, and Sassafras has a night of rock with Year of the Fist and Double Header. Those who love dance should check out World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee or the West Coast Swing night that Yaple's Ballroom hosts every third Friday. Saint Patrick was a gentleman, who through strategy and stealth, drove all the snakes from Ireland, here’s a toasting to his health. Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series, features a talk by Paul Baker Prindle, Director and Curator of University Galleries, UNR’s art museum. Take an early spring stroll at Fuji Park during this week’s Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk.

Ready to ‘Give where you live’? Nevada’s Big Give online fundraising drive is today, so pick your favorite local non-profit and pledge $10 or more dollars to get them on their way. The WNC Foundation will be throwing a party at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget with drink specials and more if they’re the one you choose. Learn a little about our majestic mountain views at the Douglas County Historical Society’s Second Thursday lecture. I’ve always loved Tuesdays and today is a good representation of what the day can offer. National Pancake Day at IHOP means a free short stack; but they are hoping you’ll donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

We have a wine walk weekend coming up and you won’t want to miss it. The ground-breaking on the downtown construction is Monday, so downtown will never look quite the same again. Those interested about the schedule or process won’t want to miss the ‘Pre-construction’ meeting with Public Works at the Sheriff’s office. Spend the evening in our historic downtown devouring sushi at Kim Lee’s, sampling the chef’s creations at Mystique, or enjoying a cocktail at the Carson Cigar Company. Fun seekers won’t want to miss karaoke night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Happy Thursday, Carson City. If you need a reason to get out of the house, look no further. Learn something new at one of the lectures tonight: Nicholas Clapp, author of ‘Dancing with the Devil: Virginia City’ at the Gold Hill Hotel or head to the Nevada State Museum to learn about the first fabricator of Levi’s jeans, Nevada’s own J.W. Davis. Take in some amazing views with Muscle Powered as they hike the Pine Nut Mountains. The talented band students from throughout the district come together tonight at Band-o-Rama in the Carson High School Gym. Read the whole list and find your fun.

We’ve all felt the occasional urge to ride off into the sunset, but it was those Pony Express boys that actually did it. Learn about their history from the Pony Express Association at Red’s Old 395. An informative talk at the Carson City Library sheds some light on why life is so crazy. If you’ve always wanted to learn to play with fire, then check out Controlled Burn. This regional fire spinning group will show you the ropes at A to Zen.

As suddenly as it appeared, the snow has melted from the roads, leaving no excuses for not hitting the town. Friday has arrived and with it some great live music. Live it up at Living the Good Life with Monique and Friends. Stereo Galaxy will be getting the party started downtown at Westside Pour House. Or check out Chicken Fried at Mystique. If you’re a performer yourself, then A to Zen’s open mic might be your style. Dancers will want to strut their stuff at the monthly World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee. Release your inner rock star with karaoke at Carson Lanes or Whiskey Tavern.

The International Film Weekend has returned for the third year and brings a bit of multiculturalism with it. Spend the afternoon in Marlette Hall at Western Nevada College to see what some local filmmakers have created, and then head over to the Community Center for tonight’s film ‘Cherry Blossoms.’ This is a free event and just gets bigger and better. Check out the Career Expo highlighting the Career and Technical Education program at Carson High; it’s open to the public and students. Take a gander at the list for all of today’s options.

The travels and inventions of J.W. Davis, known as the first fabricator of Levi’s, come to the Nevada State Museum from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Feb. 25, in a talk by genealogist Kathleen P. Clemence.

The inventor of riveted pants came to the American West from Russia, via the Canadian wilderness, Clemence said, with business ventures along the way. A distant relative of Davis’ wife, Annie Packscher, Clemence has conducted extensive research into the intriguing family. Fashion, fabric and function resulted in the work pants that became a famous part of Nevada history.

Break a leg to the talented members of the Carson High Drama class performing at the Brewery Art Center. There will be three performances of ‘And Then They Came for Me,’ so don’t miss them in action.

We have some incredibly talented kids here in Carson City. The jazzier ones will be performing at the Community Center tonight with the Mile High Jazz Band in an extravaganza of music. Enjoy some of our valley’s views with the Parks and Rec Easy Walk along the freeway multi-use path. Dinner plans are easy; Mystique is holding a grand opening tonight downtown, so go see what deliciousness they have to offer.

The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

In July 2013, Nevada State Museum Curator of Natural History George Baumgardner found evidence indicating a unique type of movement of bones across the surface of Smith Creek Valley Playa, in central Nevada.

Science author and journalist David Quammen will give a lecture at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Discover Science Lecture Series, Thursday, Feb. 4.

The lecture, titled “Ebola and Beyond: Scary Viruses in a Globalized World,” will focus on his most recent works about Ebola and AIDS – his books “The Chimp and the River” and “Ebola” – which stem from his acclaimed book about emerging diseases, “Spillover.”

Quammen is a journalist as well as a science, nature and travel writer. He has authored 15 books, five of them fiction.
