Western Nevada College rural campuses help boost enrollment
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/11/2013 - 5:18pmEnrollment at both rural campuses of Western Nevada College has increased this fall, after six years of state budget cuts that drastically reduced programs and available classes.
Full-time equivalent enrollment, which measures the number of credits a student takes and is a key factor in determining state funding levels, rose 4 percent at the Fallon campus to 415 and 3 percent at the Douglas campus to 371. At the Carson City campus, full-time equivalent headcount rose by 2 percent, indicating that individual students are enrolling in more credits.

Schneider author of the book “The Science of Consequences: How They Affect Genes, Change the Brain, and Impact Our World” on Monday, Sept. 9, 6:30 p.m. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) 108 East Proctor Street.
Ten years in the making, Schneider’s book describes the science, its role in the larger realm of nature and nurture, and its many applications-including favorites like parenting language development, and self-control.

We had survived the mid-term "deselection process" (a Peace Corps term for the trainees who didn't make it--close to 50% of the students). We had endured weeks of intensive Turkish language instruction and instruction in TEFL (teaching English as a Foreign Language from some of the country's foremost experts. In addition to studying Turkish politics and culture, we wilted under the physical education requirements at 5:00 in the afternoon during a D.C.
Free GED Boot Camps at Douglas, Carson City WNC campuses

The free GED Boot Camps provide intensive instruction and preparation for students interested in passing a GED or high school equivalency exam.
“The GED boot camp covers all sections of the official GED exam: science, social studies, reading, writing and math,” said Angela Andrade-Holt, WNC Adult Literacy and Language program coordinator. “Students also receive test-taking skills and a week of review prior to the administration of the official exam.”

Carson City authorities arrest two in connection with car theft
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 07/31/2013 - 10:08amCarson City authorities arrested a 20-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man on Tuesday who were involved in a car theft from the parking lot of Burger King on Monday.
Kayla M. Robbins was jailed after surveillance video obtained showed her taking a Honda Civic on Monday at 7:53 p.m. from the restaurant at 3589 North Carson Street. The vehicle belonged to the restaurant manager.
Robbins allegedly walked past the unattended, unlocked car parked outside the main doors, got inside and sped away, according to the arrest report.

Western Nevada College to graduate its largest class Monday

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.
California, Nevada governors agree to preserve Lake Tahoe Compact

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Calif. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced Tuesday an agreement that renews the partnership, which has been under threat of repeal.

There are no cuts which is why spending goes up each year.

Hindu mantras to open both Nevada Senate and Assembly in April

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the Senate and Assembly. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English translation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.
