Forest Service: Slide Fire containment efforts underway, FAA investigates aircraft crash

UPDATE 12:47PM: According to KTVN Channel 2, authorities say one person is confirmed dead after a small recreational aircraft crash that sparked the 80-acre Slide Fire. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.

The Slide Fire that began Sunday afternoon north of Carson City on Slide Mountain following a crash involving an aircraft is now 80 acres and 10 percent contained, the U.S. Forest Service reported Monday morning.

Carson City fire crews called to assist on brush fire in southern Douglas County

UPDATE: 1:10PM: The brush fire has been contained, according to East Fork Fire Protection District Deputy Fire Chief David Fogerson, as reported by KTVN Channel 2 News in Reno.
Per the Channel 2 News report, officials said the fire started after a crow came into contact with a power line.
Fire crews are now mopping up the fire, and Topaz Park Road has reopened.
The fire was burning uphill, officials said, and light winds appeared to work against the fire.

Upper Colony Road Fire in Smith Valley more than 1,180 acres, sixth brush fire in Lyon County since June 2

UPDATE: 8:42AM: From Lyon County Facebook page: Lyon County had its 6th wildfire since June 2. The Upper Colony burned more than 1,000 acres on June 17, 2018. A Type 3 Incident Management Team took the fire over at 8 p.m.
The Smith Valley Fire District did an outstanding job working the fire and bringing in resources. Over 300 people fought this fire with 25 Engines, 3 Helicopters, 8 fixed wing aircraft, and 4 hand crews.

Lyon County opened a shelter at the Smith Valley Baptist Church. LCSO managed evacuations with the assistance of SAR and Douglas County. The Large Animal Rescue Team assisted with sheltering livestock.

UPDATE: 07:30PM: The Chaves Fire has now burned about 400 acres of BLM land near Stagecoach and Dayton. Fire crews with BLM, Nevada Division of Forestry and Central Lyon County Fire Protection District, among others, are on scene battling the blaze.

Suspect in Montage apartment shooting in downtown Reno shot and killed

UPDATE 9:16PM: The suspect in an active shooter situation was shot and killed by law enforcement following gunfire from the Montage apartments in downtown Reno Tuesday night, a spokesman for the Reno Police Department said. See the story here.

Updated Nevada Day Parade line up list and map

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. Carson City, East Fork send crews to Woodchuck Fire west of Reno

UPDATE 6:23PM: Forward progression of the Woodchuck Fire in west Reno has stopped. No homes were lost. Two small trailers were destroyed.

Carson City Fire Department and East Fork Fire Protection District have sent brush engines Monday to battle the Woodchuck Fire burning west of Reno.

Slinkard Fire Update: U.S. Highway 395 reportedly open, fire at 9,000 acres

UPDATE 11:30AM: Acccording to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group web site provided by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the Slinkard Fire has officially burned more than 7,880 acres and is currently about 20 percent contained at this hour.
More than 600 firefighting personnel are on scene, including 15 crews, four helicopters, 56 engines, two bulldozers, and 11 water tenders.
U.S. Highway 395 is reported to be open in both directions. However, both the Nevada and California highway patrols remain on scene to monitor the situation.

The Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake has grown to about 9,000 acres in size, but firefighters have achieved at least 10 percent containment on the blaze as of about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, according updated reports from all three major television news stations in Reno.

Two Carson City residents died in a motorcycle crash Sunday on Highway 89 in Alpine County, authorities said.
The names of the riders are being withheld until family has been notified.

Lyon County authorities and FBI investigate shooting death of Mason Valley mail carrier

UPDATE: Lyon County sheriff's spokesman Michael Carlson said a U.S. Postal Service delivery worker who was killed on the job in northern Nevada was delivering mail to her own home, and her husband first reported her shooting death as an accident, according to KTVN. The husband of Johnie Nicole Shadden was questioned but not arrested after Shadden was pronounced dead outside the house about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near Yerington.

Deer with stringy rope around antlers makes a stop at Nevada State Capitol grounds

A deer roaming Carson City with thick, black rope or heavy string wrapped around its antlers stopped by the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol building complex Tuesday. These photos above and video below were taken by Connie Higgons Corley of Dayton.

Corley had first encountered the deer during a ghost walk Saturday morning along the west side of Carson City. She contacted area media to bring attention to the plight of the deer. It does appear now that there is less of the tangled netting around its antlers. At one point, the string had covered a side of the deer's face.

UPDATE: Carson City sheriff's detectives have released a photo of a Christmas card that was sent to Justice of the Peace John Tatro in December of 2014. The card was sent to the judge’s residence with the words “You Will Die” written inside it.

Carson City pays respects to Deputy Carl Howell

Thousands of Carson City residents lined Musser and North Carson Street this morning to pay their respects to fallen Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty on Saturday, August 15, 2015 responding to a domestic violence call.

The procession was led by the Carson City Motor Patrol Unit, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. It was followed by dozens of law enforcement agencies from around the region who came to pay their respects.
