Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital Branch, and PFLAG Carson Region, will present election forums Wednesday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 18.

A Carson City man was arrested early Friday morning on felony suspicion of burglary, grand larceny and attempted burglary after allegedly stealing $800 in jackpot money from a player at a casino. During the investigation, officers recovered items stolen from a vehicle burglary that happened earlier, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital Branch, and PFLAG Carson Region, will present a series of election forums on Oct. 11, 12 and 18.

A free Western Heritage Festival comes to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 17, beginning at 10:00 am.

The festival will include Dutch oven cooking, a heritage quilting presentation, Chautauquas of local historical figures, honky-tonk guitar and jug music, as well as a day filled with children’s crafts and activities.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Back to school week is just about behind us, so do something to celebrate your survival. Southbound Train hits the outdoor stage at Living the Good Life, followed by hours of dancing with DJ Bobby. Cowboy Bobby will get your boots on the floor with Country Dance Night at Carson Lanes. Take the kids to Minden Park for the final family concert in their GE Series: Foreigner Unauthorized begins at 6 p.m. Shine up the chrome for the Carson SYFL Car Show at Bully’s Sports Bar, and catch some NFL pre-season while you’re there. Rex Allen Jr. carries on the cowboy tradition this weekend in Minden, Nev. Fans have a rare opportunity to join the legend horseback on the trails his father, Rex Allen, made famous on the big screen. The concerts are also “bucket list” shows, since Rex Allen Jr. is on his farewell Sunrise to Sunset Tour.

Carson City Mayor Robert L. Crowell and Justice of the Peace Judge John Tatro presented Senior Judge John W. Ray with the proclamation in his home with his wife Geniel Ray by his side. Youth Theatre Carson City’s production of Legally Blonde, Jr opened to rave reviews this past weekend at the Carson City Community Center, and we are thrilled to announce that there are three more opportunities to see our exciting production, based on the hit film starring Reese Witherspoon and the award-winning Broadway musical, Friday through Sunday in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

Living in the dusty, dry high desert means that we escape cancerous car rot. Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association, Sierra-Tahoe Unit #137 presented a check to the Carson City Sea Cadets in the amount of $350 to Catheryne Sainz, Commanding Officer, USNCCSC. The money was donated throughout the year by the membership to their President’s Project, Jan Solberg, Jr. Past President and Brenda Horton, President.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk.
