Dear PHS Families, Fellow Educators, and Carson City Community Members,

On behalf of the PHS and Carson Online staff, we are extending a collective thank you to families, K-12 staff and administrators, and members of our community. You have each played an important part in helping our students achieve such an important milestone in their lives.

Minden-Tahoe, Reno Tahoe International, Reno Stead, and Fallon Municipal are among 10 Nevada airports awarded $21.8 million in Federal Aviation Administration infrastructure grants, federal officials announced Wednesday.

Pioneer High School held a graduation ceremony Tuesday evening at the Carson City Community Center to commemorate the achievements of 56 students who completed their high school coursework.

Between the 56 students, they secured nearly $125,000 in awards and scholarships to assist with continuing education, which is a new record for the high school.

Carson High School students not only experienced exciting college, job, and career opportunities outside of school this past week, they were also presented with an explosion of options directly.

Chamber Orchestra Students returned from their successful regional music festival in San Francisco, several CHS students enjoyed job shadowing with Nevada Legislators, and May 21 offered students access to its job and career fair throughout the day.

As 18-year-old Logan Evans donned the virtual reality headset in the library of Churchill County High School, his speech pathologist, Justin Worthy, asked him a string of questions.

“Do you know what world you’re going into?”

Statewide jobs increased by 3.6 percent, a gain of 49,600 new jobs added since April of last year across the Silver State, according to an economic report released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training Rehabilitation.

School is out or wrapping up for summer break and students from universities, colleges and high schools across Nevada are prepared to make the walk to receive their diplomas. To celebrate these achievements, consumers in the Silver State will spend an estimated $86.8 million, according to projections by the Retail Association of Nevada.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

A donation from the Rotary Club of Carson City has allowed Carson City to purchase five bus shelters for the Jump Around Carson (JAC) transit system. This $3,000 donation serves as the critical local funding required to leverage an existing federal grant for the purchase, which totaled $40,000.

The Carson City Junior Ranger Program educates youth about the environment, fosters a sense of community, and encourages life-long environmental stewardship. Throughout each year's Junior Ranger events, children will fill out their educational Adventure Guides at each program as they learn more about the outdoors.

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada increased by 2,800 jobs in April and is up 49,600 over the year. The state’s unemployment rate decreased over the month by 0.2 percent to 4 percent and is down half a percent compared to April 2018, according to figures released Wednesday from the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has issued a proclamation declaring the second week of May as Travel and Tourism Week in the state. The proclamation, issued on May 3, comes as part of a broader national celebration of the travel and tourism industries in the United States.

Miranda grew up in Carson City, went to Carson High School, lived a normal childhood. She is the second oldest of four siblings, and grew up with loving parents. But her life changed forever when she became addicted to drugs.

Her mother, Kristi, has been fighting to keep her daughter alive since then, facing numerous near-death scares.

CARSON CITY — Jobs in the capital city increased by 3.3 percent over the year, while Reno continues to experience the best rate of growth at 5.8 percent, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

CARSON CITY — Clifton Bullock’s extended service to his country put some of his educational goals on hold. Now, because of a new policy at Western Nevada College, Bullock will be rewarded with college credit for his military service, expediting his goal of realizing an associate degree and applying for admission into nursing school.

In an era where students are more comfortable communicating behind a screen rather than face-to-face, teaching Physical Education can be more than challenging at times. It seems that each year there are fewer students who enjoy physical activity. This year has been no different.

Dear Friends, happy spring time! While our newest season officially arrived March 20th, it seems just now I am starting to believe winter is finally losing its grip and giving way to the kinder, gentler, days of spring. With each day, I see a little more of the renewal of life we have come to associate with this time of year.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said, “A mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions.”

Pioneer High School students had plenty of opportunities to participate in new and important experiences when they attended the Career and Development Conference in Reno.

Deciding what to do with the rest of your life can be daunting. Walking into a library isn’t. That’s the premise behind a new initiative, “Libraries Equal Education,” where Nevada libraries are harnessing resources to help people match with suitable career paths.

This is the fifth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real per-capita incomes are lower now than in FY06. The other two analyses reviewed spending on health and social services and on K-12 education, the two largest budget items by far and the only major areas on which spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy.

Pioneer High School’s Senior in the Spotlight for the month of March is Kaylee Vega. Kaylee is hardworking, honest, dependable, and kind. She also has a great sense of humor. She began attending PHS during her sophomore year. The smaller campus and extra help with academics are what appealed to her most.

CARSON CITY — The Silver State experienced the fastest rate of job growth in the nation at 3.5 percent from February 2018 to February of this year, according to a report released Tuesday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

When I was about 12 years old, my family took a trip down along the east side of the Sierra Nevada on our way to Lake Havasu, California, during Spring Break 1986.

All six of us piled into the family Ford Econoline Trail Wagon, brand new at the time, and set out to break in the new set of wheels.

LAS VEGAS/CARSON CITY, Nev. – Gov. Steve Sisolak and the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) board approved performance-based initiatives for seven businesses to relocate in Nevada or expand their operations, which could create 270 new jobs.

The companies’ applications approved for initiatives represent a wide range of businesses across the state including a robotic company in Reno, a technology company in Las Vegas, and an industrial supplier of organic botanicals, spices, chili and teas in Minden.

Employment in Nevada declined by 900 jobs over the month but is up 48,400 jobs over the year, the largest annual increase seen in February since 2006, according to a report released Wednesday by the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
