Introduction to Handcrafts (Age 6 and up)

Discover how to create things with fibers! Depending on student interest, this series may include the basics of knitting and crochet, embroidery stitches, off loom weaving, rope braiding, and wheat weaving. Learn the history of each craft form and its current applications. Create sample pieces as keepsakes. All materials will be supplied.

Introduction to Acoustic Music and Singing (For ages 6 and up)

August 6, 2012 (All day)

This series will introduce traditional acoustic music styles through instruments and voice.
Students will follow the development of genres such as the blues, bluegrass, Celtic music, gospel, jazz, Latin, and traditional folk music through presentations and demonstrations. Participants will be able to try out a variety of acoustic instruments. Songs will be selected by the group for a short recital at the end of the week.

Tuition: $95 ($85 for siblings and BAC Members)

The 2012 Carson City/County Democratic Convention will be held on April 14, at the Community Center Gymnasium 851 E William St., starting at 8:00 AM for registration. To avoid waiting in line, you may also preregister at the Democratic Headquarters 502 E. Johnson Street, Friday April 13 from 6PM to 9 PM. If you would like to become a Democrat, you may also register with the party at this time.

BRIC offers new business education series

CARSON CITY, NEVADA – The Business Resource Innovation Center is launching a series of free business education classes beginning March 21, 2012. The series, “Hwy 101-RoadMap to Business Success”, will be held Wednesdays from Noon to 1:30 pm. These classes will complement the existing business library resources available, as well as individual business counseling and mentoring offered by the BRIC. These free classes will focus on key information for both entrepreneurs and existing businesses.

Conservative Nevada Think Tank Publishes Sourcebook For Policymakers And Public

CARSON CITY – A conservative Nevada think tank today published a guide for policymakers and the public on issues ranging from the state spending to public education to tax policy.

The 88-page sourcebook, called “Solutions 2013” is a compilation of research and policy recommendations from the Nevada Policy Research Institute addressing 39 different subject areas.

DFG moves to protect mountain yellow-legged frogs

The California Fish and Game Commission has voted unanimously to protect two species of native frogs under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA). The unanimous vote was taken at the Commission’s February 2 meeting in Sacramento.

Following recommendations from the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), the Commission moved to list the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae) as a threatened species and the southern mountain yellow-legged frog (R. muscosa) as an endangered species.

Lake Tahoe boat inspection finds 37 quagga mussels on vessel

Boat inspectors at the Spooner Lake inspection station prevented a boat with 37 quagga mussels from entering Lake Tahoe on Aug. 7. The boat had arrived from Lake Mead, a water body known to be infected with aquatic invasive species. This incident was the first evidence of quagga on a boat attempting to enter Lake Tahoe this year, according to officials at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Nevada Governor signs bill to control and prevent invasive species

With the passage of AB167, signed by Governor Brian Sandoval, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will develop a coordinated statewide aquatic invasive species (AIS) management plan to control and prevent species like quagga mussels, Didymo (rock snot), Asian clams, curly leaf pondweed, northern pike and may others.
The bill’s main sponsor was Assemblywoman Irene Bustamante Adams
(D - Las Vegas).

Gov. Sandoval Questions If Legislature Can Hold Meaningful Tax Policy Debate In Time Left In Session

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval is questioning whether the Nevada Legislature can have an in-depth debate about the state’s tax structure with less than four weeks left in the session, but he is about to find out.
In comments made Tuesday, Sandoval said he asked Democrats in January to present any proposals they wanted to be considered to raise revenue. Fourteen weeks later there is still no bill, he said.

CARSON CITY – Freshman Assemblyman Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, watched as one of his first bills was introduced on the floor of the Assembly Tuesday.
Hansen’s bill would establish a state grants coordinator to help Nevada apply for and win more federal grants.
A few hours later, Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, stood at a lectern flanked by the American flag and the flag of the State of Nevada, and told a gathering of reporters about his bill.
