Information Now Available To Nevadans About High Risk Health Insurance Pool Program

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Division of Insurance is alerting Nevadans to a new federal website for information about the temporary high risk health insurance pool program created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

CARSON CITY – Nevada is about to begin a new tax amnesty program in the hopes of bringing in several million dollars worth of uncollected revenue to help with a severe budget shortfall.
The amnesty program, which will run for three months beginning July 1, was approved by the Legislature in a special session in February as a way to help close an $800 million gap in the general fund budget.

The State Division of Insurance office was reopened at 7 this morning after being closed Friday when a number of employees became sick. Employees were told that a grape seed extract had been used in the air ducts to eradicate pigeons.

A spokeswoman with the division confirmed the building was closed because of pest control, performed by a cleaning crew, because of pigeons in the air ducts. The department of Business and Industry closed the building at around 11 a.m. on Friday, sending employees home.

Carson City deputies arrest Sacramento man after finding meth during traffic stop

A Sacramento man faces drug trafficking, paraphernalia and other charges after Carson City sheriff's deputies found four grams of methamphetamine and smoking pipes inside his truck after a traffic stop.
Randall Velmar Berke, 54, was pulled over on a suspended registration early Wednesday morning at the corner of Carson Street and Fleischmann Way.
The arresting deputy learned from the suspect that he didn't have insurance and when his license was checked to see if he had warrants, the deputy learned it had been suspended.

Tort Reform Attorney Questions History Making Hepatitus C Verdict in One of Nation’s “Judicial heckHoles”

A Clark County District Court jury last Friday ordered Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Baxter Healthcare Services to pay a combined $500 million in punitive damages to a Nevada man who contracted Hepatitis C during an outbreak two years ago.
The jury award was the largest in Nevada history.
In a statement issued shortly after the jury reached its decision, Teva said it planned to contest the verdict.  A spokesman for Baxter later confirmed the company will also most likely appeal.

Carson City deputies arrest woman wanted for credit card fraud

A 34-year-old transient with a criminal history involving fraud was arrested by Carson City authorities after giving them a false name.
Helen Holguin, 34, faces felony charges of credit card fraud, breaking probation and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing. She is being held without bail at the Carson City Jail.
On May 10 at about 11:12 p.m. a vehicle was pulled over by a Carson City deputy on West Long and South Carson streets because it didn't have a license plate. According to the arrest report, the passenger in the car had acted suspicious, clutching a large purse.
