Reception honors Vegas shooting victims

Families check out an ofrenda or altar created to honor the victims of the recent Las Vegas shooting during the Dia de los Muertos reception at the Nevada State Museum on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017. The free celebration at the museum continues with “Family Fun Saturday,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., including crafts, traditional Mexican dancing, bilingual storytime and other activities. Though the level of library support varies throughout school districts in Nevada, the Carson City School District highly values school libraries as it promotes literacy through funding, a full-time library staff at each school, and certified teacher-librarians at CHS and the middle schools.

Many amazing opportunities are going on in the CHS school library. The CHS Library is piloting the Nevada Teacher-Librarian Evaluation framework and transitioning from a “library” to a collaborative learning commons.

Carson High School junior places first in Race for the Cure

Carson High School junior Ethan Byassee placed first in Race for the Cure held Sunday at City Plaza in downtown Reno. The 17-year-old finished with a time of 17:23. Ethan is a member of the CHS Varsity Cross Country team and Track and Field teams.

Carson City School District on tap to receive $1.38 million for Read by Grade 3 program

The Carson City School District will receive $1.38 million in funding for third phase of the Read by Grade 3 program, also known as RBG3, the Nevada Department of Education announced Friday. Lyon County School District is on tap to receive $671,825 in funding, and Douglas County School District, $655,182.

CHS opened its doors a little longer, a little wider, and totally unplugged for Sept. 11-17, 2017. Students and staff participated in daily activities supporting and encouraging a non-digital learning environment. Each day, five standards of Social and Emotional Learning were touched by encouraging students to power-down their phones and unplug.

Stewart Indian School annual Powwow recognized with national award

The Stewart Indian School Father's Day Powwow often stands out to attendees by the setting alone. “It’s a beautiful campus with multicolored stone buildings as well as the the grassy field,” said Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission. “That’s a big attraction because most powwows are held in dirt or in parking lots.”

The days of summer flew by, and soon it will be fall again. Life and its events are relentlessly changing as though time were speeding up. Here at CHS, this new school year brings a list of new students, new clubs, and new activities to the desk and table of CHS teachers and students, and because time passes so quickly when busy, it is easy to become stressed with anxiety and succumb to its temptations.

Carson Online, Flexible School Choice

Carson Online, the Carson City School District’s online education program, was piloted at Pioneer High School in 2009. It has become a very successful online credit option for students in CCSD that has helped change culture, provide technological support, and has helped raise the graduation rate in our district. During the last school year, online options assisted over 970 students.
