Nevada governor extends COVID-19 shutdown until end of April, urges residents to shelter-in-place

Gov. Steve Sisolak has extended all of the state’s emergency actions to mitigate spread of COVID-19 — including closure of public and private schools, a nonessential business shutdown and ban on large gatherings — until the end of April, while urging state residents to shelter in place.

The governor’s updated order, released by his office Wednesday morning, is the latest signal by state authorities that the massive disruptions to normal public life needed to combat the spread of the virus are nowhere near over yet.

Nevada governor announces moratorium on residential, commercial evictions during COVID-19 crisis

Gov. Steve Sisolak has announced a moratorium on evictions for both residential and commercial tenants for the duration of the state of emergency, providing relief for renters who, in many cases, are facing the first of the month without a job and are under orders to try to stay at home for their own health.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Carson Tahoe Health (CTH) is unveiling several “Karma Boxes” (wooden/Plexiglas donation cabinets) at its various locations to house toiletries, first-aid items, and nonperishable foods for those in need, all available at any time and at no cost.

This simple, yet powerful concept is best summed up by its slogan, “If it’s empty, fill it. If you need it, it’s yours.”

Foundation awards Carson City-based Pets of Homeless grant to provide nationwide dog vet care

Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a national animal welfare nonprofit based in Carson City, Nev., received an $83,000 grant recently from the Lazin Animal Foundation, to provide financial assistance toward emergency veterinary care to more than 220 bully breed dogs in 2020.

Elks Lodge celebrates Carson City Search and Rescue with $2,500 grant

On Friday night, the local Elks Lodge chapter hosted a sold-out dinner and fundraiser event in support of the Carson City Search and Rescue volunteers.

The program included a a live auction, raffle drawing, and presentation of the Elks National Foundation grant of $2,500. These Gratitude Grants are used to support local, charitable activities such as hosting a community clean-up day, purchasing supplies for a homeless shelter, or organizing a school literacy fair.

The Elks Lodge is celebrating 150 years of service.
