Alpenglow Sports has teamed up with Tahoe Cross Country to present the first-ever Lake Tahoe Nordic Festival Friday, February 8 through Sunday, February 10. All events are free, open to the public and take place at Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area in Tahoe City, California. A full schedule of events is available at www.tahoenordicfestival.com.

Sagebrush journalism was a style of literature born in the American West that had some very deep roots in Virginia City. It came to life around 1860 and had run its course by the turn of the 20th century. In that ensuing 40 year time period some Sagebrushers became world renown.

North Lake Tahoe pulls out all the stops to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics with the Olympic Heritage Celebration beginning Saturday and lasting through Jan. 21 at venues throughout the region.

The event, which is sponsored by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association, kicks off Saturday, January 12 with the REI Winter Trails Day at Tahoe Donner Cross Country Resort in Truckee.

The Carson City Historical Society’s Christmas party will be Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the Bliss Mansion from 2 – 4 pm. We are sure to have a festive holiday afternoon at the lovely Bliss Mansion with hors d’oeurves, wine, and two kinds of entertainment. Dr. Michael Fischer, well-known Chautauqua speaker, will treat us to his impersonation of Governor John Sparks. Afterwards, Consort Trio (a trio from the popular Consort Canzona including harpsichord, cello, and recorder) will perform. The trio will play music from AD 1400 – 1620. You won’t want to miss this delightful performance!

In fringe politics, throwbacks are in fashion. Libertarians gained strength in their call to return to original constitutional principles when Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, a believer in the cause, championed it in the 2012 campaign. Tea Partyers have donned tricorn hats and called for revolutions like it’s 1776.
Yet despite the surge of historical homage, no one in Nevada actually has tried to resuscitate a past political movement.
Until now.

Cookie Bible got off work early on Friday and drove to the Purple Avocado to buy five of the city's newest Christmas ornaments, which feature historical Carson City buildings.
“They're wonderful,” she said. “They're the perfect Christmas presents for family and friends who are old Nevadans.”
The 11th annual ornament features the First United Methodist Church.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will be presenting awards to its 2012 recipients of its Special Recognition Awards in a brief ceremony on Monday, Nov. 7, at 3:00 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Visitors to the annual Carson High School Holiday Crafts Fair will also have a chance to look through the school’s yearbooks which date to the 1920s and high school newspapers dating back to 1950.
In addition to viewing these unique historical archives, visitors may buy yearbooks from past years in this “Garage Sale” fundraiser. All money raised will benefit the school’s publication class which prints the Carneta yearbook and maintains the online Senator News newspaper.

With around 63 percent of Carson City's 26,000 voters taking care of business prior to today's General Election by showing up to the courthouse for early voting or casting their ballots by mail, voter turnout Tuesday has been a steady and even flow, election officials have observed.

There was an expected rush early when the polls opened, with 1,300 voters making it to the Carson City Community Center before 10 a.m., said Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover. Otherwise turnout has been as expected: No long waits. No crowding.

"Virginia City and its Archaeology: A Thirty Year Overview" will be presented Nov. 15 by State historic preservation officer Ron James. CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society is now accepting memberships from people who want to be among the early pioneers of an effort to create a museum and tours of the state’s oldest prison.

As an "Old Timer" who was born and raised in Carson City, the Nevada Day celebration has always been something special in my life.
Through many years of living in Carson City, I have enjoyed many of the activities associated with the celebration of our state's admission to the Union, way back on October 31, 1864.

CARSON CITY – Nevada retailers are expected to add more than 4,000 seasonal positions through December, the Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) said today.

The estimate is based on an assumption that hiring in 2012 will be comparable to last year, when the state added 4,100 retail positions between September and December for a 3.2 percent increase in total employment in the sector.

Comstock Conflagration: Exciting Adventures During the Fabulous Virginia City Bonanza

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library will host author Larry Wilcox Tanner on Tuesday, August 21st at 6:00 p.m. “Comstock Conflagration: Exciting Adventures During the Fabulous Virginia City Bonanza”, published by Kettlebelly Enterprises in 2010, is a historical novel about a sheriff in Virginia City during the era of the Comstock Lode. His book will be available for purchase. This program is free and open to the public.

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

CARSON CITY – A state panel charged with implementing a system to track individual student performance from preschool through entry into the workforce is recommending that $4 million in state funds be appropriated by Gov. Brian Sandoval and the 2013 Legislature to help accomplish the task.

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.

The summer sizzles as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses and jazz lovers proudly present the 2012 "Jazz & Beyond" Carson City Music Festival, an annual event that began in August 2004. Performances at multiple venues in Carson City will feature more than 100 musicians in over 50 bands, Aug. 3-19 and are mainly free. Music styles include Dixieland jazz, big band, bluegrass, Latin, blues and folk.

Fish are active and conditions are perfect.
The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

May 16th was Muscle Powered’s annual Bike to Work Week cruiser ride, and this year we had record attendance. We estimated around 100 riders this year, double the previous record of about 50. Thank you nice weather!
