Nevada game wardens are seeking information about a bull elk that was poached and left to rot near the Pearson Ranch late August in Lincoln County. Operation Game Thief is offering a $2,000 reward to help catch the shooter.

You can’t think about Halloween without thinking about bats. Those creepy, blood-sucking rats with wings give us the heebie-jeebies and we don’t care who knows it. Well don’t let Jennifer Newmark, Wildlife Diversity Division chief for the Nevada Department of Wildlife hear you say that.

Lake Tahoe has been recognized for another important conservation success. Our region’s proactive, collaborative strategy to protect Tahoe yellow cress, begun almost 15 years ago, is working so well that the plant does not need additional protections under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Tahoe South is destination vacation central for the 2015-16 ski season with more than $200 million in major enhancements in lodging, recreation and dining hot spot renovations that are underway.

From slope-side to beachfront and all points in between, the ongoing revitalization opens the gates to additional places to stay, shop, dine, play, recreate and experience the Tahoe lifestyle. Major news continues with the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, which broke ground Oct. 1.

The Nevada Division of Forestry will conduct prescribed burns at Carson Lakes, about eight miles south and two miles east of Fallon, Oct. 19-22, weather permitting.

The burns are being conducted in cooperation with the Department of Wildlife. The burn of 964 acres will remove the growth of cattails and bulrush to improve wildlife habitat for water fowl.

Successful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide Wednesday that Tahoe yellow cress, a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the popular lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The highly anticipated Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe broke ground Thursday in a ceremony highlighting the major impacts it will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

Aquatic invasive species are one of the most serious challenges facing Lake Tahoe. They continuously threaten to damage its unique environment and famed water clarity and degrade the world-class recreational experiences residents and millions of visitors enjoy each year.

This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that uses data from aerial surveys that take place across 13 different survey plots, was recently released.

The public will have a chance to learn about sustainable landscaping in Lake Tahoe at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on August 19. The tour will begin at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden and continue down Pioneer Trail towards Meyers Station.

BSA Troop 33 is excited to announce it will be hosting its 2nd Annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 15, 2015 at Carson City’s Fuji Park.

The Show will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; award ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Registration is $40 per entry. There is still time for pre-registration or you can register on the day of the event. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Protecting bat habitat across Nevada, and why doing so is good for all, is the topic of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s August program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 27 presented by Jenni Jeffers.

Nevada is home to 23 species of bats. Its 250,000 abandoned mines have become important artificial roost sites for a large portion of our bat population for at least a part of their life. Jeffers will share how important bat habitat is protected and show photos of the species using these abandoned mines.

History shows time and time again our greatest accomplishments at Lake Tahoe are achieved when people work together. In the past, Tahoe was known as a place where unproductive interactions between stakeholders led to a stunning decay in our environment and our economic vitality, creating a region that seemed frozen in time.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on Thursday voiced its strong support for legislation to reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act that has been introduced in Congress by Tahoe’s Senate delegation.

Sponsored by U.S. Senator Dean Heller, R-Nevada, along with Harry Reid, D-Nevada, Dianne Feinstein D-California, and Barbara Boxer, D-California, the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act would authorize up to $415 million in federal funding over 10 years to help continue critical environmental restoration work at Lake Tahoe.

The July 4th holiday and fireworks celebrations always bring a welcomed influx of boaters to the Lake Tahoe Basin. With sunny skies and warm temperatures predicted for the 4th of July holiday week, boaters are urged to Clean, Drain and Dry their boats before arriving at the roadside inspection stations in Tahoe to avoid delays and decontamination fees.

The Nevada Dream Tag Program is a raffle that allows resident and nonresident sportsmen a chance at the hunt of a lifetime while also contributing to Nevada’s wildlife habitat. The tags are similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a lifetime” tags.

The Nevada Waterfowl Association has selected the Bufflehead as the species for this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest. The contest is sanctioned by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, with the winning artwork to be featured on the 2016-2017 state stamp.

The Nature Conservancy, working with federal, state and local agencies, as well as a private landowner, are collaborating on a forest restoration project designed to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires, protect onsite and neighboring structures, protect water supplies for people and enhance wildlife habitat near Carson City.

In a continuing effort to help increase the population of Bi-State sage grouse, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service to address major threats to the population within an area located in Lyon and Mineral counties.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife urges sportsmen and other interested parties to become involved in the big game quota setting process by providing their input at the upcoming Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners meeting in Reno this Friday and Saturday.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September 2015.
