Me-For-Incredible-Youth, Inc., also known as MEFIYI, along with the Carson High School basketball program, is offering a three-day coed skills and development camp at the Carson High School gym. The camp is for boys and girls, grades third through 8.

It is that time of year again, time for the Carson High School Class of 2017 to graduate and move on toward other exciting endeavors. Many graduates will continue their education by heading up to the next level, going off to college, while some will attend a trade school, and yet others will simply begin employment in a field of their choice.

Children have always been welcome at the Tazmanian Boxing Club, a gym founded by former professional Bantam-weight boxing champion Francisco Rodriguez, himself a father and family man.

CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval hosted community advocates, law enforcement officials, members of the Legislature and their invited guests in his office Monday for the signing of several bills. The Governor has signed 73 bills into law with 22 receiving final approval.

Today, I’m going to put on my career coaching hat for this column. Lately, I have run into a lot of educated professionals who are having difficulty finding gainful employment.

It is beautiful outside, the sun is shining, and all of nature is demonstrating its beauty through its natural and exquisite display.

The wind blows, and the trees dance. Cats and dogs run to and fro playing with one another, at least most of the time. Wild animals, though difficult to see at times, are moving about through the forest in search of food. So what is the story here a reader will ask?

CHS students are taking advantage of the beautiful weather, and some of them are going too far with the natural.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

Join us for an indoor yard sale to benefit the Eagle Valley Middle School robotics team, The Jedi Engineers. This team will be headed to Bath, UK in June to compete in an International Championship. One hundred percent of the proceeds will assist the team with travel costs. Join us inside the big gym from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — The Silver City Arts group announces its exhibition featuring the work of Larry Kotik in his first one person show. The group will host a reception on Saturday, May 6th at the Silver City School House, 385 High Street, from 1 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited.

Take advantage of the spring sunshine and seize the day. Virginia City roars with the sound of their annual Grand Prix. Beer and brats aren’t usually associated with ballet, but the Sierra Nevada Ballet makes the annual event at the Brewery Arts Center a great time for all. The Earth Spirit Faire wraps up its weekend of wellness at the Community Center. Head to Reno for a Cinco De Mayo Celebration at the Grand Sierra that features musicians, cuisine, and carnival rides.

Hold on to your hat, the weekend is here. If it’s a cowboy hat, head over to Genoa for their annual Cowboy Festival. Plenty of free things to see, hear, and experience await. The annual Spring Earth Spirit Faire lets you celebrate Mother Earth with workshops, holistic practitioners, great vendors, and a raffle. It benefits the Heart to Heart School and Advocates to End Domestic Violence so it’s always worth checking out. You’ll have to keep reading for all of your choices, the spring thaw brings out the best this valley has to offer.

SATURDAY:

Today has quite a bit going for it, hard to believe that it’s a Wednesday. Learn more about the Craft Brew industry in Nevada and how to support its growth at the ‘Free My Beer Festival’ at Fox Brewpub. Fritch Elementary School is the beneficiary of tonight’s ‘McTeacher’ Night fundraiser at the South Carson McDonalds; both drive-thru and dine-in orders count. It’s Red vs. Blue in the Morse Burley Gym at Carson High School. The traditional basketball game between Democrat and Republican legislators also raises money for local seniors.

CARSON CITY — Can Republicans go left? Can Democrats go right to the hoop? Those are two questions to be answered when elected officials of both parties meet for the Biennial Donkey/Elephant Basketball Classic benefiting the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs of Seniors in Service.

Carson High School students worked tirelessly over the previous eight months to prepare for Carson City community volunteers, many of them CHS graduates who completed the Senior Project themselves, to evaluate both their portfolios and their speeches to be delivered Saturday.

Smack dab in the middle of April and the town is officially in its Spring thaw. Easter is on Sunday, so just about anywhere you go you’ll find the Bunny and an egg hunt. To make it easy, I’ve moved all of those events to their own everything Easter list HERE.

Carson City School District, in partnership with McKinstry, a national leader in designing, constructing, operating, and managing high-performance buildings, has begun a series of building modernizations that will save the district $357,000 annually through reduced utility and operational costs.

The support received from the community of Carson City is enough to make people from all over the country want to relocate. Former students know there are no special funds available for high school clubs to organize a prom or enjoy interscholastic competition.

I hope nobody thought Thursdays were boring: this list will prove them quite very wrong. Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. Irish eyes are smiling on us: it’s going to be a gorgeous day. You won’t have to look far for some green beer, whiskey, or corned beef – there will be St. Patrick’s Day parties all over. Live music is on the menu, as well. Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

Bringing an American reality television series to CHS Business Students is another reason why Carson High School is a cutting edge high school. Thanks to teachers Billy McHenry and Angila Golik as well as Carson City community professionals, students are offered real life experiences.

Students from Pioneer High School in Carson City traveled to RockSport, an indoor rock climbing gym in Reno to practice skills beyond the classroom. It was a partnership established five years ago to assist PHS students with physical education options and provide motivational events to increase attendance and academic achievement.

• Senior Issues at the Nevada State Legislature

We’ll wake up to sunshine, but some snow may be in the cards this afternoon. Please drive safe when it’s slick out. ‘Our Story, Inc.’ takes you on a tour of Black History in Northern Nevada in the foyer of the Legislature; they’ll be on hand at the Carson Library this evening for a special Black History Month Celebration. Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

Jules Radow of Carson City has been selected posthumously as Boxer of the Month for February at Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada (RSBNN), an athletic program for individuals battling Parkinson's Disease and Parkinson's-like symptoms, Certified Rock Steady Boxing Trainer and Tazmanian Boxing Club owner Francisco Rodriguez said.
