CARSON CITY — The Desert Gardeners announced the winner of a beautiful garden-themed quilt raffled during a fundraiser to benefit The Greenhouse Project during its May meeting on Thursday, May 16.

Gardener’s heaven! That’s what I feel when I visit a botanical garden. Last week we went to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens at Fort Bragg, California. It’s not simply the plants that put me over the top. It’s seeing what is done with the design: how the textures and shapes go together; how the colors are coordinated for complement and contrast.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

This weekend, grab mom and the family and come on out to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, located on the campus of Carson High School.

Due to the event’s growing popularity, the sale is expanding to both Friday, May 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. Looking ahead there's art showings and painting workshops, a C-Hill hike to see the firefighting sheep, a school district strategic planning meeting, a Salsa dance class, and "Ideas on Tap," a monthly series of interactive conversations at The Union Eatery and Taphouse.

Calling all fungi enthusiasts! Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is going to be looking for wild mushrooms behind the Foothill Garden, behind the Carson-Tahoe Health Cancer Center in the 1500 block of Medical Parkway, with the help of the garden site manager, Will Pierz.

Join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department for an educational hike on C-Hill and learn about the ways sheep grazing helps prevent wildfires. Please leave all furry friends at home, as we will be hiking near the sheep as they graze.

Looking for volunteer hours? Want to help create pollinator-friendly habitat in Carson City? Come help us weed the Pollinator Garden site at the Foothill Garden behind the Cancer Center! No need to stay for the whole 3 hours, any and all helping hands are appreciated. Water, snacks, tools and gloves will be provided. See you there!

A fundraiser for a Carson City mother who is currently battling stage 4 breast, bone and liver cancer is set for this Saturday, April 27 at Flat Earth Pizza.

The fundraiser for Mila Mangone of Carson City is from opening to closing, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the pizza restaurant, located at 2010 E William Street. Portions of the proceeds collected at the fundraiser will help Mila's treatment plan.

Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of plant and animal species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. In recognition of this year’s official Earth Day theme, “Protect our Species,” the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (NDCNR) is helping to educate communities about the many wonders of Nevada’s native species, and strategies underway to help advance biodiversity and foster thriving ecosystems.

Our favorite sheep friends are working hard to reduce cheatgrass for fire season, and while people are permitted to go and coo over how adorable they are, multiple people have been also bringing their furry friends without leashing them, which scares the sheep and makes it difficult to perform their important work.

In Nevada, we have two seasons: winter and fire. At the moment, we're right on the cusp of fire season, and our proactive sheep friends from Borda Family Lamb Ranch have risen to the challenge to help preventing fire devastation in Carson City for another year.

There are still six garden beds available for use this season at the Carson City Community Garden for residents who are interested in growing their own vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Good morning Carson City, and happy Saturday! Today is a day that will definitely feel like Spring, with temperatures almost to 70 degrees. The low tonight will be 36, reminding us that we haven’t shirked off the cold weather entirely just yet.

On the docket today we’ve got the Wine Walk at the Carson Mall, a Downtown Easter Egg Hunt, an Anniversary Party at Browser’s Bookstore, easter bunny photos, and more!

On the windy morning of Saturday, April 6th, local gardening experts presented and answered questions at the Greenhouse Project’s Foothill Garden.

They were joined by the Greenhouse Garden Center, the Carson City Chamber Leadership Group of 2019, and the Great Basin Beekeepers of Nevada. Each organization presented their information on the variety of aspects that make a successful garden.

The Greenhouse Project hosts its annual Early Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an array of perennial and annual varieties ready to go into your garden.

Last week I went to visit Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City with my plant buddy Peggy. While a bit early for full inventory, they had some amazing hellebores. They are also called Lenten roses, because they bloom at the beginning of Lent.

Good morning Carson City! Today is Saturday, April 6. While it's going to be a bit cloudy today, we'll have a high of 56 degrees. Sunday and Monday are almost hitting 70, though, with highs at 67 and 68!

On the docket for today is a Celtic Music concert, a Ducks Unlimited Banquet, the April Carson City Wine Walk, farming workshops, kitten parties, and more.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Carson City has gone blue with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a national event hosted by Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada.

On Friday, Carson City residents joined together to plant pinwheels across the Nevada Legislature's lawn, in an effort to raise awareness about preventing child abuse.

“The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve,” a spokesperson for the national event said. “We want to reinforce the notion that healthy child development serves as a foundation for both community and economic development.”

An Earth Day Celebration of Pollinators is set for April 28, 2019 at the historic Foreman-Roberts House Museum in Carson City. This will be a welcoming event for children and families seeking to learn more about the Earth and value of conserving resources.

On Monday morning Mayor Bob Crowell donated $500 to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce 2019 Leadership Institute to help fund this year’s class project, a bee hotel in honor of the community being named the first Bee City USA of Nevada.
