CHS Cheerleading 'Cheer Me Up Cards' offer discounts at 41 Carson City area businesses

The Carson High School "Cheer Me Up" cards are on sale now and feature 41 different Carson City businesses that are offering discounts on services, food and merchandise through April 2014.

Tricycles at Artsy Fartsy

Local art gallery Artsy Fartsy is getting in on the Bike Month festivities with a display of tricycle art. Created by northern Nevada artists, these trikes will be for sale starting Saturday, May 4th from 12-5PM during the downtown Wine Walk. A portion of the sales will go to benefit Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Bikeable and Walkable Carson City. Here’s a look at what was parked out front of the Gallery on Friday.

High Sierra Swing Dance Spring Ball winners

Lisa Schuette and Bob Truesdale danced an East Coast swing medley to garner first place in the "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contest April 27 at High Sierra Swing Dance Club's sixth-annual Spring Ball at the Carson Nugget.

Drawings by North Las Vegas artist Marylou Evans are the latest creations featured at the Nevada Legislature at LXS, the Legislative eXhibition Series gallery in Carson City. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. adjacent to the Caucus Deli, the LXS displays Evans’ work April 29 through May 17. Managed by the Artist Services Program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series has provided a spotlight on the Silver State's breadth of contemporary and folk artists during the biennial session since 1985.

Nevada Expressions II Comes to Carson City: Art Show and Sale to Benefit Historic Preservation on the Comstock

After a successful run in Reno at the Sierra Arts Foundation Gallery, the Nevada Expressions II Art Show and Sale will come to Carson City. The opening is on Friday, April 26, 10 am – 8 pm, at the Great Basin Art Gallery at 110 South Curry Street and the show will run through Sunday.

The public is invited to the artists’ reception, Friday 4 – 8 pm. Stop by to meet and see the work of 25 of Nevada’s leading contemporary artists. The work is primarily paintings with some jewelry, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media.

'Always Lost: A Meditation on War' exhibit honored at Nevada Legislature

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

Western Nevada College’s acclaimed creative writing/photographic exhibition about the costs of war will be on display in the Nevada Legislative Building’s second-floor atrium weekdays through May 3.

Get Ready for Bike Month

Next month is Bike Month and there are plenty of activities planned in Carson City. We kick off on April 24 with Nevada Moves Day at the State Legislature.
Muscle Powered is organizing exhibits in the front foyer of the legislative building highlighting Nevada groups working for better walking and biking. Participants include the Reno Bike Project, Safe Routes to Schools, the Carson Valley Trails Association and more.

High Sierra Swing Dance contest 'celebs' prepare for big night

Six local Carson City celebrities are competing in a "Dancing With the Stars"- type contest at the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s sixth anniversary dinner-dance on April 27 at the Carson Nugget.

The "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contestants have been paired with local dance instructors for a variety of dances, including swing, country, Latin, and hip hop. The instructors are Jo Ann Grace, Rainer Herm, Emily Thicke, Armando Nevarez, Earl Case and Bob Truesdale.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its sixth-annual anniversary Spring Ball dinner-dance on April 27 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St., Carson City.

Support Nevada’s Gift to the Nation

I wanted nothing to do with Western Nevada College’s Always Lost: A Meditation on War project when English professor Marilee Swirczek presented the idea in 2009 of personalizing the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars through literary work, combat photos, and a wall displaying the faces of U.S. military war dead since Sept. 11, 2001.

After concessions and collaboration, Lake Tahoe Regional Plan approved

For the first time since 1987, Lake Tahoe has a new regional plan for development and land use.
Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.

Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

Carson City Christmas Time Art Show at BAC

The Nevada Artists Association will present the Christmas Time Art Show at the Carson City's Brewery Arts Center Gallery. NAA artists will be exhibiting fine art in paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and glass. 'Living in El Norte' art exhibition at Courthouse Gallery

Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition by artist Blanco de San Roman at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from September 14, 2012 through January 18, 2013. Blanco's exceptional paintings continue the centuries long Spanish tradition of monumental portrait painting. Deborah Boehm, PhD, has written the exhibition essay, "The Universality of Daily Experience". The gallery is on the second floor of the Courthouse at 885 E. Musser St., Carson City. Hundreds arrive in Carson City motorcycle convoy with Traveling Vietnam Wall (Photo Gallery)

Hundred of motorcycle riders arrived Wednesday with the Traveling Vietnam Wall in Carson City in an official escort by the Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Veterans and local military personnel assisted in the convoy that began from the Silverado Casino in Fernley and ended at Mills Park in Carson City, where it will be put up overnight in time for Nevada Day Festivities.
The Traveling Vietnam Wall honors our fallen servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice and paid the ultimate price in the name of freedom and duty.

Nevada Arts Council Awards Jackpot Grants to Artists

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded $9,148 in Jackpot Grants to nine Nevada artists and one public institution for arts and arts learning projects. Jackpot grants are awarded on a quarterly schedule and are designed to support arts projects initiated by artists, schools, nonprofit organizations and public institutions. These projects are usually “sudden opportunity events” or applications from groups new to the NAC.

Take a glimpse at a photograph that evolves into multiple masterpieces at the Nevada Artists Association’s Seventh Annual Landscape Show at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery, from July 31 – September 7 in Carson City.

Participating artists paint from the same photograph provided from the show using their own style and mediums, and even creating their own version of the photograph. The gallery will display the different styles that the artists have used for their creation.

While the BAC is open to other artists and arts organizations, as well as the general public for collaborations and to rent their facilities, a resident status may be offered to organizations who demonstrate sound business practices, financial strength, the ability to fill seats and, above all, artistic prowess. Both organizations will retain their independence and tax exempt, nonprofit status.
