Carson City area weather: Winds to bring colder temperatures, storm potential later in week

Gusty winds, especially in the Sierra, are expected Monday and Tuesday along with a cooling trend happening this week and the potential for snow by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

19-year-old Carson City man arrested for domestic battery after forcefully keeping girlfriend of one-month from leaving

A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 300 block of W. Hampton Drive early Friday morning for domestic battery after allegedly pushing and hitting his girlfriend who was attempting to leave the residence.

Juan’s Mexican Grill to open Monday in Downtown Carson City

Carson City’s newest Mexican eatery will be officially opening this Monday, Jan. 18 in its new downtown home.

Owners Juan and Maria Salazar have been running the first location of Juan’s Mexican Grill for years inside the Comstock Casino and this new location, which took over the venue left vacant by Battle Born Social, will be their second.

This is not their first time serving up Mexican cuisine in the downtown area. Juan’s used to operate both inside the old Mo and Sluggo’s (now the Pourhouse) as well as the Horseshoe Club (now closed).

DETR: Regular program claimants continue to transfer to state extended benefits

For the week ending January 9, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 9,511, up 1,050 claims, or 12.4 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 8,461 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Through the week ending January 9, there have been a total of 803,738 initial claims filed since the week ending March 14, 2020.

Quad County COVID-19 Death Total reaches 163 with an additional three deaths reported Friday

Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) is reporting 3 additional deaths due to COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region.

Update: Car drives into Sportman's Warehouse, five injured, two evacuated by Care Flight

UPDATE 3:00 p.m.: Law enforcement has cleared the scene and the vehicle was towed. According to Furlong the driver of the vehicle was a man in his 50s. They are currently not regarding the collision as suspicious. It is being investigated by the traffic unit as well as by Nevada Highway Patrol. The driver is suspected to have driven through the cement pylons and through the front doors of the store, and continued through the store striking four people until the vehicle came to a stop. The driver of the vehicle along with four individuals struck inside the store were taken to the hospital.

UPDATE 2:06 p.m.: They are preparing to remove the vehicle from the building.

UPDATE 1:00 p.m.: Stewart is reopened.

UPDATE 11:49 a.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong they believe the driver of a vehicle traveling West on Wright Street experienced a medical emergency, causing them to continue through Stewart Street and directly into the doors of Sportsman’s Warehouse. The vehicle struck five people as it drove through the store.

UPDATE 11:43 a.m.: Both Care Flight helicopters have taken off and are heading to the hospital.

UPDATE 11:36 a.m.: Both helicopters have landed. Stewart Street is blocked.

UPDATE 11:08 a.m.: A second helicopter was ordered to the scene.

Streets will be closed down near the scene including at the roundabout for the helicopter to land.

Multiple injuries were reported at the scene of a traffic accident on Friday which occurred just after 11 a.m.

Nevada Health Link, the online health insurance marketplace operated by the state agency, the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange (Exchange), reminds Nevadans that Open Enrollment for a comprehensive, Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health plan for 2021 ends at 11:59 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2021.

Consumers who enroll by the deadline will have coverage effective February 1, 2021.

DETR: Claims activity mixed over the week, increases in State Extended Benefits claims continue

For the week ending January 2, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,461, up 1,252 claims, or 17.4 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,209 claims, according to data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Since the week ending March 14, 2020, the first week Nevada saw claims increase due the pandemic, there have been a total of 794,227 initial claims filed.

Traffic accident reported at northbound I-580 in Carson City Friday evening

At 5:49 p.m. on Friday evening a traffic accident was reported on northbound I-580 in Carson City.

First responders as well as Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers are enroute to the scene.

Motorists should avoid the area if possible.

First responders called to Carson City Airport for airplane emergency Friday afternoon

UPDATE 3:19 p.m.: No injuries are reported and responders were released from the scene. Responders on scene stated this was not an aircraft crash but rather a "skid out."

UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: All first responders are now on scene at the airport.
