Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Happy Sunday, Carson City! But it's not the end of the weekend yet, at least not for some, thanks to Veteran's Day Weekend. Here are the events left for the rest of the weekend!

Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. Daughters of the American Revolution, Battle Born Chapter, and Fort Churchill Society, Children of the American Revolution, celebrated Constitution Week on September 15, 2019 with a gathering featuring guest speaker Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury, whose topic “Rascals and Rebels: Uprisings that Sparked America” described the struggles that changed history.

Battle Born Chapter DAR and Ft. Churchill Society Children of the American Revolution invite the public to "Celebrate the Charters of Freedom" this Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the Ormsby Room, located in the Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser Street, Carson City.

Carson City Republican Women along with Carson City Republican Party are hosting their annual Freedom Fest barbecue on Thursday, July 25, 2019 on the grounds of Glen Eagles Restaurant, 3700 N Carson St., Carson City.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of more than $1 million in statewide grants to 172 recipients ranging from individual artists to nonprofit organizations and public institutions for the 2020 fiscal year.

The City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its largest and most successful Fourth of July parade ever, with 80 entrants, 300 walkers and thousands crowding the streets to watch, officials said Thursday.

Andrea "Ande" Engleman, a former newswoman and longtime fixture in Nevada media who, as executive director of Nevada Press Association, was a strong advocate for open government and press freedom in the state, died of cancer at her home in Carson City on June 12. She was 79.

After reviewing the failures and treachery of his opposition and the Fake News, he counted at length the accomplishments of the American people and his administration. He ushered in the summer of our politics, economy and culture and outlined the challenges we face and how we will Keep America Great.

This is my final column on the sad legacy we Boomers are leaving our children.

The first one defined the public interest as mainly maximizing economic growth. That piece and the next showed that the economic policies, practices and institutions that maximize growth also promote fairness among individuals. They also debunked obsessions with income inequality. The third part focused on the 21st Century revival of progressivism and statist liberalism, plus the addition of political correctness (PC).

Here I offer directions for some solutions.

In my last column I raised the sorry legacy my generation, the Boomers, are leaving our children and grandchildren.

I outlined the main problems, especially the increasing embrace over the last 150 years of statist liberalism, progressivism and now even socialism – or, in general, the slide away from our essential founding values, social institutions, practices and policies to coercive collectivism. Another problem area has been the embrace of certain exotic goals and their derivative ideologies as being central to our politics instead of the special interests they are.

Sierra Lutheran High School sophomore Annalynn Mueller was honored Monday during a surprise ceremony at the school for taking second in the nation in the Fleet Reserve Association’s (FRA) Americanism Essay Contest.

More than 100 people joined NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada (National Abortion Rights Action League) in a rally Tuesday at the Nevada State Legislature to support Senate Bill 179, also called the “Trust Nevada Women Act.” In a time when abortion is being outlawed in several states around the country, Nevada instead went in the opposite direction with SB 179, securing a woman’s right to choose.

The 80th session of the Nevada Legislature is underway with over 1,200 bills up for consideration. With so many bills it is nearly impossible to give each one the proper consideration required, as was intended by the founders of our great state. This means we are considering a great number of laws; however, what we should be focusing on is producing well thought out legislation.
