Statewide events in May celebrate historic preservation, archaeology

May is a month to celebrate historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Carson City 2017 Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt begins Monday

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission is holding their 8th Annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural windows, all within the Carson City Historic District. The contest will run from May 1-26, 2017.

Volunteers meet for Saturday's annual Carson River cleanup; plus Hike for Health at River Fork Ranch

The annual Carson River cleanup event is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 am until noon. Volunteers should check in at the Silver Saddle Ranch by 8 a.m. and bring a hat, sunblock, gloves, long sleeve pants and shirts.

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission will hold its 7th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning Monday and running through May 31.

Carson City scavenger hunt among events statewide to mark 50th year of National Preservation Act

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Wednesday, Nov. 11: Things to do in Carson City

Today is Veterans’ Day: a day to commemorate the men and women of the Armed Forces that have fought, and possibly died, for our country. Thank you for your service. Several places around town are offering something special for our Veterans today: free coffee, free breakfast, free lunch, etc. You’ll need to bring proof of service. Tonight, everyone is invited to the party. Check out the Junebugs at Living the Good Life. The Portland pop-folk band returns for a night of fun and dancing.

Sierra Lutheran High School Hosts 7th and 8th Grade Visit

Sierra Lutheran High School will be hosting a 7th and 8th Grade Visitation day on Monday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon.
A free lunch will be provided. Students will have opportunities to tour the school, meet faculty and current students, participate in activities, and hear about the various academic, athletic, and arts programs available. Although “every day at Sierra Lutheran is an open house,” this is the perfect opportunity for prospective students to come preview all that Sierra Lutheran has to offer.

I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: August 29-30

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

BAC’s Art in the Park program gives kids creative outlet in their own neighborhood

This summer the Brewery Arts Center has featured Art in the Park three days a week in the parking lot of Empire Elementary School near the entrance of Park Terrace in Carson City.

The program is made possible through the Brewery Arts Center and a grant from the Nevada Arts Council. The hope is by next summer grant funding will be available for the program to operate five days a week, said BAC Executive Director Gina Hill.

Tahoe Bike Challenge Bike Path Cleanup

Join us as we celebrate the Tahoe Bike Challenge with a community BIKE PATH CLEANUP event on Saturday, June 13th from 10am-noon.

Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Then we’ll meet up at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office (2608 Lake Tahoe Blvd.) for a free lunch, raffle and celebration after 12pm. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided!

Pizza Factory offers free lunches for vets on Veterans Day

They say there's no such thing as a free lunch. But this Nov. 11, on Veterans Day, the Pizza Factory restaurants in Carson City, Dayton and across the west will treat veterans to lunch on the pizza chain's dime.

"We appreciate everything our veterans have done for our country and want to honor their service," says Mary Jane Riva, chief executive officer of Pizza Factory, which has 110 restaurants throughout Nevada, California Idaho, Washington, and Arizona.

The Carson City restaurant is located at 3120 Hwy 50 East. The Dayton restaurant is located at Pizza Factory 185 U.S. 50.

Chamber, NV Energy partner for Sept. 10 free energy workshop luncheon

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce and NV Energy's Sure Bet Program have partnered for a Wednesday, Sept. 10 energy savings workshop and free luncheon at the Carson Plaza.

The workshop is designed to help business owners and managers learn how to assess their energy needs and help customers determine where improvements can be made. It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free Outdoor Youth Expo a Huge Success

This past Saturday close to 200 youth and their families came out for one of the largest free youth outdoor expos in the area.
This is the first year that the Wild Sheep Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation combined their efforts to make one, huge event.

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission has launched its fourth annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning today through May 28.

The adult scavenger hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural features, all within in the historic district, and the kids scavenger hunt will consist of 20 historic features within a smaller area.

Completed entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 28 to the Planning Division at 108 E Proctor Street. Entries with all correct answers will be entered into a drawing to be held on May 30.

Food for Thought celebrates new location with open house on October 24

Food For Thought, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing healthy food to hungry children in Carson City, Silver Springs and parts of Douglas County, has moved its headquarters and will hold an open house to show off its new digs.
Food for Thought's Grand Re-Opening will be on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 5:30-7 p.m. at the NorthTown Plaza, 3246 North Carson Street, Suite 118 in Carson City.
