Autopsy released on teen killed by falling tree in South Lake Tahoe, investigation ongoing

When Dejon Smith left home after school on Dec. 11, like any teen facing a snow day the following day, he told his parents he was headed out for the evening. He did not tell them where he was going or with whom he would be.

DeShawn and Taneka Smith, Dejon's parents, were concerned when, at the end of the evening, they hadn't heard from their son.

A few ideas were tossed around before settling on Food For Thought as the organization they would like to help out.

Food For Thought is a local organization that provides weekend food for school aged children in the community that are chronically hungry.

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association.

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash.

Here Ye, Here Ye, Royalty Has Arrived

Carson High School's annual homecoming has arrived. Kicking off the event-filled week was an assembly Tuesday where seniors got their first taste of what candidates they might want to vote for to represent as their 2014 Homecoming royalty.

This year's candidates are just as lively as ever. Candidates for Homecoming queen are: Abbey Dudley, Lindsay Hettrick, Bailie Zuber, Chantal Torres, Sarah Christl and Jessica Basa. King contestants are: Jared Hearn, Dylin Rooker, Nolan Shine, Fred Christensen, Casey Stevens and Kyle Kunz.

Big Energy Savings at New Warehouse In Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center

Energy sipping LED lights, along with an abundance of skylights and motion sensors that automatically switch off the lights when they aren't needed — referred to in the energy industry as "daylight harvesting" — are expected to reduce annual energy costs by about $110,700 at one of the newest warehouses in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Sparks.

Senator Square: Homecoming week, sports signups and senior spotlight

The annual tradition of Homecoming is upon us. There are many activities taking place this week, both athletic and non-athletic. Each day has a particular dress-up theme, a lunch time activity, and an evening time activity that students can participate. Tuesday’s dress up day is “crazy hat” day.

Carson football action: Senators top Damonte in nail-biter

The Senators football team of Carson High School took on the Mustangs of Damonte Ranch High School under the Friday night southeast Reno lights.

This week's match up was the opening of league play throughout the northern region and it was "Pink Night" for students and parents to celebrate the first game of October and breast cancer awareness. The game was incredibly close from the opening kick off to the final whistle. In the end Carson was victorious.

T- Minus Two Weeks Until Homecoming

It's almost that time of year again at Carson High School. That one week of school where everybody dresses like a fashion-less hippy, has wild date proposals and bonds the student body closer as a school. This of course would be the one and only Homecoming week.

This year's homecoming theme is "Around the World" and the date is set for October 14th-October 18th. It would appear that Homecoming is looking very promising thanks to the leadership of this year's Master of Ceremonies: Jared Hearn and Sarah Christl.

Senator Square: Academic achievement, scouting leadership put Carson senior in spotlight

This week’s Carson High senior spotlight is on Tyler Torres. Tyler has a GPA of 4.62 and has increasingly challenged himself with honors and/or AP classes every year, earning academic letters the past two years. He is currently taking four AP classes in his senior year. Talented and well-rounded, Tyler has been in Chamber Choir since freshman year. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years and Link Crew for two years. To further develop his leadership ability, Tyler has been involved in Boy Scouts since middle school.

Senators football: Carson hands Hawks first loss

Coming off a disappointing one-point loss at home, Carson football coach Blair Roman wanted nothing more than for his team to bounce back with enough heart to pick up a tough road win Friday at Hug.
The No. 5 Senators came through.
