We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. Sections of the Linear Ditch Trail in Carson City will be closed starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, for maintenance and cleaning. The multiuse path will be closed from the east end of the Linear Ditch, east of Fremont Elementary School and continue west to South Roop Street along Governor’s Field. Maintenance is anticipated to take up to several weeks.

Beginning Sunday, Oct. 6, exit numbers on Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway will change as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation project to resurface and enhance the roadway.

A 51-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and driving without a valid license after allegedly striking a vehicle in a parking lot and then passing out, according to a Carson City sheriff's deputy report.

Segments of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway will be reduced to a single lane throughout the weekend as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation project to resurface and enhance the interstate.

I-580 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between North Carson Street and College Parkway from 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 through 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 as crews stripe the newly-paved freeway and resurface bridge decks. Speeds will be reduced to 45 mph, and motorists should anticipate minor travel delays.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called Sunday afternoon to a vehicle accident in the area of Highway 50 East and Fairview.

Carson City is so full of amazing history that sometimes it boggles the mind. As we have always asserted, the true history of Nevada was made right here in Carson City and from time-to-time, we are reminded of our rich heritage.

One of those reminders will be evident once again on Thursday, Sept. 12 to commemorate the Centennial Celebration of the arrival of then Lt. Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower who joined the convoy to test the shape of America’s roads and military vehicles as part of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy that started in Washington, D.C. and ended in San Francisco.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, lost their lives in a senseless crime, when a man entered the Carson City IHOP and opened fire.

Now, eight years later, their memories are kept alive by their friends and family, and by the community they called home.

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Thursday afternoon to a brush fire in the area of Rattlesnake Hill near Fairview and Lepire streets.

The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run, walk on Friday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011. The run, walk will start at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 7 a.m.
