What Works: Spring cleaning your soul

Recently, I’ve made some sizable changes in my life. Call it “spring cleaning” of the soul, if you will. I’ve changed the way I socialize, who with, and why I do it in the first place.

I have said goodbye to people I thought would be in my life forever, people who made an indelible mark on who I am and people who were simply friends because we co-existed in the same place. Why did I do all this “cleaning?” I did it to make room for something better.

What Works: Life's Blessings and Lessons

Singer-songwriter Frank Ocean said, “we met for a reason, either you’re a blessing or a lesson.”

Think about the people you have met over your lifetime, the relationships, the friendship, the “frenemies,” and outright enemies. Each and every one of them adds something, however small, that impacts how you address life.

Business Profile: Finding Paradise in Carson City

You could say Perry and Starr Nixdorf were jumping into the deep end of the pool when they decided to create Paradise Salon-Spa-Wellness, which celebrates its grand opening March 27-29.

It’s not just that they bought a building that is seven times larger than the previous salon space they rented on Winnie Lane. Or that they went from a staff of four to 19 independent contractors. Or that they expanded from doing hair and body piercing to just about every salon/spa service you could ask for.

The Proposed Carson City Sales Tax Increase — quit whining and start helping

As could be expected, the proposal to raise Carson City’s sales tax has brought out the “government is bad” crowd to whine about everything that could possibly go wrong. The problem with this approach is that there ends up being such a long list of gripes that it’s hard to take any of it seriously. There have no focus, just a terrified howl of discontent about the sky falling.

Riding is Interesting and an Adventure in Carson City

I was recently reading local commentary over on Carson Now titled, Driving is Interesting and an Adventure in Carson City. The title is sarcastic, the article really expressing the author’s frustrations with driving in our city. While the points made in the article are valid, they’re certainly not unique to Carson City. This is simply the reality of driving a car in an urban environment.

The resolution passed in the Senate on April 22 in a vote of 12-9. The only Republican Senator to vote in favor of the measure was Sen. Ben Kieckhefer. Kieckhefer has declined requests from various media outlets asking him to comment on his position, saying that his vote in favor of the resolution should speak for itself.
