Meet Vance Alm, M.D. Candidate for U.S. Congress at Friday Carson City Town Hall meeting

Event Date:
May 16, 2014 - 6:30pm

"Of the people, by the people, for the people"…Lincoln’s statement about the government of the United States of America. It seems that far too many people now fear our government due to the perception that it doesn’t provide for the common man. There is great concern that we are becoming a nation of the corporation, by the corporation and for the corporation. It seems that the individual doesn’t matter, that our voice is absent in the decisions our country makes. Politics now seem to be all about money and placating the special interests.

What Works: Finding your happy

Sunday I spent the day at the Reno Earth Day Festival with some friends. It was really nice to sit down on the grass, bask in the sun, and slow down for a while.

I had brought a few toys with me, four bubble guns and a hula hoop. While we were playing with the bubbles, I took a moment to observe the crowd around me — everyone “finding their happy” in their own way.

Dream, work, achieve: a story for our children

Nevada has some amazing people. This is a story about one of them, Dr. Thomas Schwenk, Dean of Nevada’s medical school – a story he tells to inspire beginning medical students and others.

Thirty years ago, after completing their medical residencies, Schwenk and a partner opened an office in a small northern Utah town. They were the only physicians in a large area, the closest hospital was an hour away, and even helicopter transport took time to arrange.

Column: Take steps in handling finances for parents or relatives

You may be asked to help handle the finances for your parents or another relative. That is not an easy job and it might be in addition to making health care decisions and/or serving as a caregiver.

If you are named in a Power of Attorney for Financial Matters, you have a new title – “Fiduciary”. That means you need to do the work and decisions correctly, always remembering it is their money, not yours.

First read the document carefully, reading it out loud may help your understanding. Sometimes you can involve the loved one in understanding what it means.

Outdoors with Don Q: Nov. 18 is a very significant date in the Far North

This is my annual reminder that November 18 is a very significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census).

Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole.

On November 18, the sun sets below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).
