Vaccination clinics offered at Carson City schools

Carson City Health and Human Services is working with the Carson City School District to offer students annual seasonal flu vaccinations. There will be a team of CCHHS licensed nurses at each school to administer the flu vaccine. The vaccination is safe and a health action that benefits all age groups to protect against influenza illness.

Carson City School District to offer preschool at Boys and Girls Club

The Carson City School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to house a new Pre-K (preschool) classroom at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Twenty students between the ages of 4 and 5 will receive full-day instruction this school year Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Among the great social changes that drove economic growth in the latter half of the 20th Century was the large-scale entry of women into the labor force. With more Americans working, family lifestyles changed rapidly.

But this growth of the female labor force required families to find ways to care for their children while both parents were at work. Although some parents could rely on grandparents or others to watch their kids, that option was unavailable to many.

Joseph Patrick McGuire III Born May 20, 1951 - Died January 12, 2017

Born in Pittsburgh, PA., the second eldest child of Joseph Patrick McGuire Jr. and Sylvia Francis May, Joe spent his early childhood in and around that area, moving often due to his Father’s work.

In 1964, at the age of 13, he and his family moved to Carson City, the Capital of Nevada. It was there, playing in the school band, that Joe had discovered a love of music that would become the muse that he would follow the rest of his life.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

Carson City Parks & Recreation Community Service Awards Ceremony

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2016 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.

Dodgers take WNC's Peters in fourth round

DJ Peters broke a number of records for Western Nevada College during his final season for the Wildcats in 2016. He added one more on Friday morning when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the WNC outfielder in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Western Nevada College graduates record number

Western Nevada College graduated its largest class ever Monday. A record 556 students earned a total of 598 degrees and certificates.

In a first, 27 graduates are high school students who participated in WNC’s Jump Start College program. These students are to receive their associate degrees prior to receiving their high school diplomas.

Juanita Westbrook returns to Dangberg Historic Park, this time as a storyteller. Westbrook will present both original and familiar stories and poems, incorporating her own unique creative style. Chautauqua performer Juanita Westbrook will present “Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Coleman: Pioneer Aviator” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday July 8, at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman, popularly known as “Queen Bess”, was the first Black woman to become an airplane pilot, and the first American woman to hold an International pilot’s license. While many people know about early aviator Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, a black woman who got her pilot’s license even before Earhart did, is little known.

Western Nevada College to Graduate More than 500 at ceremony Monday in Carson City

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Carson City Sheriff Says Early Childhood Education Could Reduce Crime

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says he supports Governor Brian Sandoval's plan to increase funding for early childhood education. Sandoval's proposed budget includes $882 million in education reforms, like Pre-K and full-day kindergarten. Furlong says he supports the programs because it could improve Nevada's graduation rates, and that could reduce incarceration rates.

Flooding forces closure of Carson City early childhood Aberasturi Center

UPDATE: Carson City School District’s Aberasturi Center, a support services, early childhood program adjacent to Bordewich Bray, has flooded and school is closed today.

School staff discovered the massive water leak at around 7 a.m. this morning, said Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes. More than two inches of water flooded the entire building.
