What a great start to March. A few days on sunshine under our belt and now it’s wine walk weekend. With fingers crossed, the weather should hold out until it’s over, but be prepared for some wind. The Shrine Circus is in Reno, Girl Scout Cookies are on sale, and we inch closer to the longer days and shorter nights of Spring. You’ll find something for everyone this weekend, whether looking for fun with friends, your little ones, or your special someone. Take a look, and have a great weekend Carson City.

SATURDAY:

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

TUESDAY:

There’s no need to travel to the Big Apple to celebrate New York Fashion Week. Fashionistas can walk the red carpet at The Nevada State Museum as part of a three-week film festival organized by Mark Salinas, the city’s arts and culture coordinator.

Coming in January are seven new courses offered by WNC Community Education in literature, art, drama and life-long learning. Linda Whitehill, Co-ordinator of Community Service and Continuing Education, announced the new offerings at WNC Carson campus to begin Friday, January 13. “We are delighted to add these unique courses to our program,” said Whitehill.

Sierra Music Society is offering a wonderful day of Opera, Food and Fun on Saturday, January 7th at 9:55 am. We are partnering with Century Riverside 12 and Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery in Downtown Reno to present “Opera and Lunch”; a Saturday of opera and friendly, social enjoyment.

Military-inspired compositions and young talent are the focus of the Reno Phil’s Classix Three, set for Jan. 15 and Jan. 17, 2017 at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts. Featured guest artists and Davidson Fellows Simone Porter, violin, and Nathan Chan, cello, perform Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, op. 102. The long-time friendship between these two young prodigies is evident during performances.

Proscenium Players, Inc. (PPI) is now accepting proposals from prospective directors for productions for our 2017-2018 Season until March 1, 2017.

Proscenium Players, Inc. announces open auditions for their upcoming production of Bus Stop, by William Inge. Interested actors are invited to audition on December 9 or December 12 at 6:30pm or on December 11 at 2:00pm at the Brewery Arts Center in the 1864 Ballroom. Performances are slated for weekends from March 24 to April 2, 2017.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the scripts and from sides. To request sides for your audition, please email ppicarsoncity@yahoo.com. All actors selected are expected to join Proscenium Players, Inc. as members.

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Kids will enjoy the Tales and Wags program at the Library where they get to read to therapy dogs and acquire a new book in the process. It’s a Carson/Douglas Army/Navy rivalry as the JROTC programs hit the field at Carson High for a game of flag football. Keep reading and you’re sure to find something that sounds fun.

It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

The weekend is here and you’ll find plenty to do in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Run from zombies in Virginia City as the REDRUN obstacle race returns. Find the perfect pumpkin at the annual Seeliger Elementary Pumpkin Patch. The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. Keep reading and you’ll find a great way to enjoy the weekend.

It’s Friday, Carson City. Time to shake off the workweek and take a break. The Trippin King Snakes hit the stage at Living the Good Life and will keep you on the dance floor. Capital City Arts Initiative keeps three galleries packed with new and interesting exhibits. Today, they welcome artist Chelsea Pegram to their space on the second floor of the Courthouse: all are welcome to the reception this evening at 5 p.m. The night sky is the topic of today’s program at Washoe Lake State Park; look up after dusk for a chance to catch some shooting stars.

Carson High School Performing Arts is proud to announce our upcoming production of A Voice In The Dark: A Salem Story by Elizabeth Downing, a thrilling drama about the dangers of intolerance and prejudice set against the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials.

As the sun sets earlier and the nights get colder, we prepare for all things autumn. In Carson City that’s Nevada Day, but Halloween is just as beloved. Virginia City gets a jump on all things ghoulish with their annual REDRUN zombie obstacle course this weekend – go HERE to register or for more information. DAYTON — David Vanegas of Medellin, Colombia shot a 5-under par 67 to take the 54-hole lead at 18-under 198 in the Stage One Web.com Tour Qualifier at Dayton Valley Golf Club on Thursday.

I read an interesting article Wednesday written by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. In this article I found the content and its title to not really mesh.

Sometimes Hollywood hits a homerun.

For example, The Big Short, the movie account of the US financial collapse of 2007-09. Its all-star cast is notable. But we were skeptical from the sound bites used in previews and other promotional blather that this would be another anti-capitalist propaganda flick. We were wrong.

Real sideshow performers star in Tod Browning's infamous cult classic, a revenge drama set against a circus backdrop. Trapeze artist Cleopatra plans to wed and then murder Hans for his fortune, but when his fellow 'freaks' discover her scheme, she becomes the target of their vengeance.

Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.

'Stagecoach' is a 1939 American Western film starring Claire Trevor and John Wayne in his breakthrough role. Director John Ford combined action, drama, humor, and a set of well-drawn characters in the story of a group of strangers riding on a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory.

The film offers plenty of cowboys, Indians, shootouts, and chases, aided by Bert Glennon's majestic photography of Ford's beloved Monument Valley.

The excitement is intense and contagious at Carson High School as students strive to make sure they get a copy of this year’s award-winning Carneta yearbook, volume number 94.

A mere seven days of school are all that remain and students are focused on the conclusion of the 2015-2016 school year at Carson High. Everyone is wearing a smile even though more final exams are still to come.

The Carson High School Theatre Arts Department recently held its annual "Drammy Awards" in the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom. Several Carson City area students were acknowledged for excellence in performance both onstage and off, and many were given special honors including induction into the International Thespian Society, Received CHS Letters, and more.

As the weather moves from a beautiful spring to a hot summer, staying at home is simply out of the question, especially with two free performances of music and drama aimed at the community of Carson City. The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at their annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents The Taming of the Shrew (in the old west) on May 26.

I recently wrote an article about child welfare needs in Carson City. This included the shortage of foster homes here in the Nevada state capital.

My wife, Lisa, and I were foster-to-adopt parents through the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for a few years. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the need for people to step up and open their hearts and homes to foster children is critical.

But making a commitment as heavy as this requires preparation on multiple levels.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

It’s the final weekend of the Proscenium Players production of Harvey; get ready for a great show. Sunday is fun day. Get ready for springtime flowers with the Anniversary Sale at Greenhouse Garden Center. If you can’t wait for your own flora to grow, join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park during their Wildflower Walk to the Deadman’s Creek gazebo. Let the little ones burn off some energy at the Carson Car Center’s Grand Opening: free hot dogs, hamburgers, and a bounce house make for a fun time.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College.
