Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Jan. 14-19

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Jan. 14-19, 2015.

NDOW: Ice on Western Nevada waterways is never safe or thick enough to support humans

While we’ve experienced fits of bitter cold weather around Western Nevada this winter, many local water ways may indeed have thin layers of ice on them but venturing out on that ice at any time, regardless, is dangerous and should never be tried, a Nevada Department of Wildlife official said.

Venturing on Sierra ice to fish or skate

According to Webster’s Dictionary, “Ice is water frozen solid by cold.” Well, with the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.

A word of warning, however: None of the ice in Western Nevada is considered safe at any time in winter. If you want to ice fish, you're going to have to head into the Sierra or areas of Eastern Nevada where some lakes freeze over and are thick enough to hold people.

Outdoors with Don Q: Some personal resolutions for 2015

This is the first part of January and this is also a good time for all of us (including Donnie Q) to make some personal resolutions for 2015. Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year.

The Annual Don Q Awards for 2014

As I have done for many years, my last article of the year, each year, is to present the Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons. Those reasons include such assorted things as: Outstanding, memorable, good, not so good, questionable, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.

These awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year.
It’s a fun way to end the year for yours truly.

So, without further ado, here are the 2014 Don Q Award winners:
Best Birthday Present:

Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Outdoors with Don Q: Christmas from our house to yours

Whether you are young or old, Christmas is an enjoyable time of the year. Christmas has always been and will always be very special to me. It has been a holiday occasion that, through the years, our family has enjoyed here in Carson City or at the Quilici Cabin near Davis Lake, Calif.

Looking for a last minute Christmas gift? You may want to get the angler in your family a California fishing license. New licenses are effective as of Jan. 1, 2015. You can purchase that license and any applicable stamps at a number of local outlets or by going here.
Nevada fishing licenses go into effect March 1, 2015.

Outdoors with Don Q: A reminder you will need a new California fishing license

This is a reminder that if you are planning to fish in the State of California in 2015, be aware that you will need a new license as of Jan. 1, 2015. You can purchase that license and any applicable stamps at a number of local outlets or on the Internet.

Outdoors with Don Q: Selected memories from 2014

As I look forward to the year of 2015 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2014.
Here are my top memories of this year, ranging all the way from right here in our very own Carson City to two islands in faraway Hawaii.

Outdoors with Don Q: We're ready for winter, here and there

It's safe to say that we are now ready for winter, here at our home in Carson City and at the Quilici Cabin near Davis Lake in Plumas County, Calif. Forecasters are calling for a winter storm to blow in Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. It takes quite a bit of time and effort, but each year a whole host of activities take place at both locations in anticipation of Old Man Winter's arrival.
Here's what I mean:

Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Nov. 26

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Nov. 26, 2014 and beyond.

Outdoors with Don Q: It's dark and cold in the Far North

This is my annual reminder that November 18 was a significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census). Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. On November 18, the sun set below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).

Outdoors with Don Q: Ask for snow, wish for snow and pray for snow

No matter how you do it, either by asking, wishing or praying, we need snow. Lots of snow. Feet of deep snow this winter. Elaine and I took a ride last Sunday to take some photos in Alpine County, and we also took our fishing equipment if we decided to fish somewhere.

We were undecided as to where to fish, but thought that we would check out some of the waters along State Route 88 and at other spots. As it turned out, we did not fish and for a darn good reason.

Outdoors with Don Q: Browsing favorite websites

As a person who spends a considerable amount of time, each and every day, having fun browsing at a number of internet websites from all over North America, I thought that it might be interesting, and perhaps even informative, to share some of those sites with you.

Outdoors with Don Q: Just a few days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Saturday, November 15.
So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 25, 2015), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

Outdoors with Don Q: Scouting for buck mule deer in the mountains

Last week, Rob Buonamici of Carson City and I spent a fun-filled day, "supposedly" scouting for buck mule deer.
I say supposedly, because we actually spent the day, having a ton of fun, enjoying the scenery and my taking a whole bunch of photos (over 60!) We were in Nevada's Big Game Management Area 192.

That Management Area is bounded by U.S. 50 on the north side, the California state line on the south side, U.S. 395 on the east side and Lake Tahoe on the west side.

Outdoors with Don Q: Make plans this fall to visit Apple Hill

A party of eight friends just returned from a fun-filled day at Apple Hill, California. Those ladies were: Mary Bottoms, Laurie Harig, Patti Isaman, Mary Morris, Elaine Quilici and Kathi Quilici, all of Carson City, plus Emily Bradburn and Carolyn Harton of Dayton. For three of them, it was their first tour-bus visit to Apple Hill.
And if you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill like they did.

If you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”
